Would it be less of a tragedy to not put lights on it so it could be driven around? Just asking.

Legal as-is in California, if it came that way and is prior to January 1, 1958

Thats true of all states. If it met federal requirements when manufactured it's legal now.

The down side is the limited visability without lights. Espically in this cocoon car, distracted driving society we're in now.

In California ALL vehicles must be retrofitted with seat belts, no exception if driven on the public streets.

Take that out after dark from a car show around here and you won't make it home. Guaranteed.
Our Model T guys use the strap-on towing lights hooked to a 12V battery.
