A 66 would be B440, and a 71 would be G440. I can't quite make out the letter in front of "440". The 3698830 casting number is a 73 -78 block.

looks like a J440 which would be ‘73 or ‘74 depending on wether they used the I or not, I don’t recall. The other looks like a T440.

I am pretty sure that one is a "J" which would identify it as a 1973 engine which would go together with the 1973 to 1978 block casting number.

The other engine (the one with the maltese cross stamped behind the 440), that could be a D or a B or maybe and F. It's really hard to tell. 2536430 is a 1966 to 1972 block.

V = 1964
A = 1965
B = 1966
C = 1967
D = 1968
E = 1969
F = 1970
G = 1971
H = 1972
J = 1973
4T = 1974
5T = 1975
6T = 1976
7T = 1977
8T = 1978

I believe that it’s a D or B

First one is a D440 so 68. The number on the side looks like what I saw on my car 20 minutes ago as well.

And the other looks like its a J stamp so 73 going off ceebuddys post

Thanks guys so with your information and another look. The engine with the iron cross is a B440 1966. The other is a J440 1973 . Much thanks .

The iron cross indicates a different spec for either an under-size main or rod crankshaft journal, or it might mean an over-size bore - I can't remember off the top of my head. Your FSM contains a list of all the symbol stamps and what they mean.

Long ago, I did a valve job on my neighbor’s 65 truck that had a 318 in it that was marked with an iron cross. IIRC, I was told that it was an ‘industrial 318’ and it had sodium filled valves. I was yelled at by my autoshop teacher that I needed to grind them with different grinding wheels, as they might explode. Did the iron cross marked engines also contain sodium filled valves?

Maltese Cross .001" undersized bearing shells
Maltese Cross and X .010" undersized crankshaft

Yes. Here is the info found in the FSM:

"IMPORTANT: A Maltese Cross stamped on - engine numbering pad Fig. 45 indicates that engine is equipped with a crankshaft which has one or more connecting rods and/or main bearing journal finished .001 inch oversize. The position of the undersize journal or journals is stamped on a machine surface of the NO. 3 counterweight Fig. 46. A MALTESE CROSS followed by an X indicates that all connecting rod and main journals are .010 inch undersize. Connecting rod journals are identified by the letter "R’’ and main bearing journals by the letter ‘M." For example "M-1" indicates that NO. 1 main bearing is .001 inch undersize."

Thanks for the info,I gotta move those engines and 727 trannys and3 complete 742 suregrip center sections. I not going to ever get to them. What would be a fair price to ask ? There are in Jamestown NY. .

What's the casting date on the 66 block? Found close to the part number. Where are you located?
When I get a chance I will look for the casting date. The engines ,transmissions and 742 center sections are in Jamestown NY.
