440 engine question

Installing a rope seal isn't quite the same as the rubber seal, I have done a couple years ago. I was taught to fit it to the cap first then remove it and install that half in the block. Then fit the other half to the cap.
 
If the engine is in the car, yeah - that's the best way to do it. Trim one length to fit the cap with about 1/16" overhang past the end of the groove on each end. Then take that piece and install into the block. Then do the same for the 2nd length witht he cap and install the cap (using appropriate sealant where necessary).
