Agreed but crash warning systems are coming on strong. I know that Dave doesn't want the computer to apply the brakes for him but I'm thrilled to have a forward crash warning system as well as blind spot sensors on my wife's ride.
 
Everybody needs to buckle up and wear a helmet before texting.

I don't make my kids (even my beautiful young daughters) wear helmets on their bikes although that's not even socially acceptable these days.

When it comes to automobile safety though, not playing around.

Apparently it's seat belts, not air bags. Air bags work best in a fairly narrow range of scenarios. They still work outside those scenarios, but not as well. Seat belts work extremely well in a wide range of situations. They pushed airbags in the 70s because they figured they would never get compliance on seat belts. If shoulder belt designs had stayed the way they were (like that picture of the coupe), they probably would have stayed non-compliant. But modern belts are pretty unintrusive.
 
The shoulder strap design in 72 & 73 Imps is unbelievably cumbersome. You feel safely strapped in but you can't move & it's just plain in the way when you get in/out of the car.

I tried them on my 73 Barracuda for a little while, these attached to the regular seat belt and were optional. The problem was you couldn't adjust anything, radio, ac and if you loosened them enough so you could then I doubt they'd do any good.

In 1969 Dodge installed retractable shoulder belts in the car shipped to the California Highway Patrol. There was a second seat belt retractor bolted to the bottom of the b-pillar and a loop at the top. The shoulder belt attached to the lap belt on the backside of the buckle. I have been told that this was designed for the trucks.
