'62 300 Sport Convertible

:sSig_greetingsthor: .......... :welcome:
Glad you made it over to our little forum.
I'm the guy who got the short end of the NV Sport 300 vert deal. But it was bought by a fellow member here and will receive a really good home, so all's well in the end.
All though that was one of my all time dream cars i'll keep my nose to the ground...... Seeing yours only makes me more determined that mine is still out there.

Hi ........Apologies for not being an active part of the forum but I've been away with work and haven't had much of chance to check on it.
Anyway, thnak you for the very warm welcome and hopefully you'll be able to find another 300.......I'm hoping to be able to spend some time on mine over the holiday. This one is full of dust and pine needles......better than rust and bugs.....but I'm going to have to take the dash apart and really clean things up. Interestingly enough, everything works on this car.......windows, seats, radio, it just needs a lot of cosmetic work.

Good to hear from a fellow Canadian.......used to live in Calgary when I was a kid......worked at Renfrew Chrysler after school where I became hooked on our fabulous Mopars.....great years and great cars.......thanks for welcoming me on board!......

I'll say Your Welcome Chris and add that you've joined ah great bunch here! NOW, What's the deal with taking the dash apart? PAHLEEZ PROCEED WITH CAUTION 'CUZ THAT DASH CAN AMBUSH YEAH. Talk to us Man and we'll try to walk you thru' it. Why do it havtah come apart? Jer

Renfrew is where we still have our monthly Mopar club meetings.

Hi Jer.......Thanks for for your knowledgeable input.......you're right, the 'H' was a bit of a worry even back then. It was white with a black top which was very popular......I loved the car but always wished it had power seats.....the Sport has the 'bench bucket' with the fold down armrest and the six-way power control...makes a real difference. I like the '999' Cordovan better than the white, and as odd as it may sound, I like the single four barrel 413 over the dual fours. I had to put a new top on this one and went with a tan vinyl ......I never had any of the original top to see what color it was so I went with what I thought would be a good match. I'll try to attach a pic. It was taken in Pasadena just before we drove it home.....
As well as the paint and 15" wheels.......it also has the 'H' torsion bars and rear spring package.....I had it up on the hoist and found the part numbers 606 and 607 on the bars .......it handles beautifully.

Really!.........wow.......I was there in '62-63' when I had an after school job with a couple of other kids cleaning up the new arrivals before they went into the service dept.......that was the highlight....we usually swept floors and cleaned up......

Thanks for the CAUTION on the dash....I've had these dash boards, or more precisely, the power paks, BITE me before....really invigorating!.......
I have to change out the wiper motor......it won't park.....while I was in there I discovered that someone had mickey moused the vacuum controls, not just the push button control which is split open just above those delicate little nipples.....( be nice guys...) .....but also the diaphragms that open and close the individual ports....this, along with all the dust and crusty wiring, the crispy dash pad, the flakey, crumbling glovebox....made the choice simple take it apart......go rob the 4 dr. htp. Newport parts car, and get this up and running the way it should be........any suggestions would be appreciated.....

Well Chris, We'll try to start where you started. The Power Pack. If it's shot, Send it to Jeff Carter up in the Seattle area @ JCRestorations iz on the web and for a complete rebuild for $75 U.S.exchange. Jeff can probably rebuild the whipper switch too! 50 year old wiring? As you know the '62 waz the 1st year for a bulkhead connector so you can buy 1/2 or both 1/2s it'z your call. Hiz name iz Greg Leggatt. P.M. me for address, E-address, and phone #on your side of the border in Napanee, Ont. east of Toronto on the lake. Greg has duplicated many of the late '50s and early '60s Forward Look wire harnesses EXACTLY FOR COLOR AND GAGE, AND CONNECTORS, AND EVERY WIRE END IS TAGGED FOR INDENTIFICATION. What's the deal with your Dash? If it's cooked and cracked try to find another '62 and color change it az needed. Don't bother looking for ah good '60 or '61. The patterns looks the same but aren't and Mother Mopar changed the plastic material for '62 and made it way more bullet proof then the other two earlier yearz. For new glove box contact Gary Goers up in Kalispell, Mt. He probably haz all 3 yearz that are the same +?? in stock. Gary works best with a fax #406-752-6249 'cuz he'z ah one man show 'cept for hiz wife Alana and some timez a part time guy when he can find one. Fax him and he'll get back with you with the price including shipping and he will not ship until he has the $ in hand! My pecker fingerz are sore so by-by fer now, Jer

Thanks for all the info Jer.....the power pack is OK....the wiper motor works whenI hot wire it. when I plug the switch in it grunts and stops.....I thought it was the switch at first so I tried the spare one I have and it did the same thing.......this is a 2 speed with the washer button....one way or the other I'll get this thing working.
The parts car I have, a '62 Newport, has a really nice dash pad that was covered up by some character who thought fake black fur would look better than the original......awful thing to do but it did protect the pad and it peeled off without leaving a residue....the wipers worked in the Newport so everything I need is there...along with the heater control...as well as any other switches that I may need......the wiring is way more flexible than the 300's so I'm going to use that too......the 300 sat out in the desert heat for 12 years so it needs all the rubber bits inside and out.....I'm going to get a new interior from Gary......the original was replaced with vinyl years ago and has gotta go......thanks again......

They were old when I was there........we loaded a bunch of 'obsolete stock' into a truck that was to be taken to the dump.....the parts guys had to smash some it with a hammer......I often think of what they wrote off and threw away......that NOS is pretty valuable now......

Your 4 speed '65 is really a nice car........I drove one in Portland Ore. about 35 years ago and couldn't believe the torque going through the gears......that wonderful 'C' body felt so good, I wanted to buy it.....it was an 'L'.......but didn't have the $3500 that he was asking......it's all 20-20 isn't it?......

62 300 Sport conv

Hello Everyone,

I just found this site this morning after reading about this 300 Sport problem on the "Forward Look" site. It's always a risk with these kind of things, and in this case, the seller is the loser.

I decided to register on your site because I too, recently bought a 300 Sport convertible. I am so glad that the fellow that I bought mine from in LA is as much of a gentleman as he is. He went out of his way to ensure that I was able to drive the car up I-5 to British Columbia without any problems. The car had sat for 12 years and needed the brakes done, from master cylinder on down, which he did for me at no additional cost. Same thing with the tires.....he installed new radials at his expense, along with new belts, hoses, and a complete tune up and carb kit. Couldn't have asked for a better man to deal with...... now he's become a good friend. He and his family are welcome at my front door any time they can make it up here.
As for the car, it's a rust free LA car that needs a lot of cosmetic work. The 413 runs and drives very well and the car is reasonably tight for it's age. I had a 'H' convert 30 odd years ago and obviously should not have let it go......but who knew?...... after getting this one I'm beginning to feel redeemed.......I've had a '62 300 Sport 4 door hard top for a number of years that I had ignored due to " life getting in the way"......now I'm stoked up again and want to do them up.......I'm attaching a photo of them both and 'Chrysler Special Car Order" sheet which I found under the dash behind the Astrodome in the convertible......Thanks again for having me on board......Chris....
