Does anyone know why these rust holes are in this exact location? Is it because water is coming from the rear window? A seam? Since both sides are in identical spots, it seems to me the water must be channeling there from somewhere. Thoughts? Info?
Thanks,
Ron

they almost always rust there, you can remove the panel to repair it by undoing some bolts that do pass through the inner "roof" of the trunk.
most likely water has been getting trapped in the space between the trunk, i cant remember if there are rubber seals there or not.
and as @Pete Kaczmarski says it could be to lack of rust proofing.
you can have a car with a perfectly dry and rust free trunk and this can happen.
its been a while since ive taken 1 of these off but i dont remember it being a long or difficult job.
its 1 of the quirks that 64-66 imps have, like door hold struts breaking, carpet that fades quickly, and cloth upholstery that doesnt age well.

Usually a hidden pocket that does not get e-coated or primed well.
The current Challenger model has this issue in the rocker area.

Thanks everyone for the inputs! Thats cool that the part comes out. I can work on repairing the rust while I look for a rust free one to swap out!
Thank you.

Agreed. This likely goes all the way back to the original production. A flaw in the production process that allows some moisture to be trapped, or missed e-cost. This exact spot seems very common in many I've seen.
