What type of bulb socket goes in the hole here? The existing black plastic socket in the harness (has a single orange wire) is too small for it so it just wobbles about.

Get some calipers, measure the hole, and buy a socket of the appropriate size. They're available in plenty. If you want Purity, go junkyarding.

Bah. Of course I neglected to get my calipers before it started pissing rain again, and I'm at work so can't get to it any time soon...
Not necessarily after purity (though it would be neat in this case) but thought someone with a 66 Polara/Monaco might have the same kind of push/flip-to-open ash tray and be able to quickly see what's in that hole.
Dash looks exactly like below, can see the ash trays beside the AC vents

Hmmmmm, I MIGHT HAVE some ashtray light sockets from our venerable '66 Newport, that stand a good chance of viability here. Download the parts catalogue for '66 and see if they're the same. I will have to dig, so if you're in a hurry, get something modern, but, Good Things come to Those Who Wait.... I have to dig a fair bit mind you, our locker has filled up a bit.

@edbods that's not a photo of a '67 Polara/Monaco ashtry. It must be '66. This is my '67 ashtray:

I've got a few knick-nacks still kicking around in boxes, one of them might be the light with a bracket that I'm thinking clips into the square hole and positions the bulb over the rectangular hole in the ash receiver. Now, what exactly would have turned it on or off, I don't know. Maybe internal mercury switch?

I'm not sure but my car may not have come with the "light group". I do have a map light and I think all cars came with the interior C-pillar lights. The light group probably included this ashtray light, ignition light, glove-box light, and trunk light (I do have trunk light switch and lamp housing so maybe that was standard). Was an underhood light ever part of a light-group?

There's no indication I can see that a lamp was or could be mountable above this slide-out ashtray drawer.
