I had to replace the front floor section on the drivers side from where the accelerator pedal is back to just before where the seat bracket is. The original piece was rusted right through. The new carpets I bought are not in yet but today I started the car and after it warmed up, I noticed that part of the new section felt quite hot. The car is a 318 with dual exhaust and the left pipe goes underneath that part of the floor.
There is about 2" space between the pipe and that part of the floorboard. The original floorboard on the passenger side has the same clearance between pipe and floor but doesn't get quite as hot. Has anyone experienced this situation before? Could it be dangerous?"
Any suggestions and ideas are most appreciated. Thanks.
John.

There is a jute pad that goes under the carpet that acts as insulation and to reduce noise so that may take care of your concern. Also, when you are driving there will be airflow under the car to cool the exhaust so it may not be as bad when moving down the road.

Thank you for your response. There is a spot on the rear passenger floor that needs repairing so when I finish that, I'll drive it and see how it feels.

IF you are concerned about the heat, you might wrap the pipe in a ThermoTec-style heat wrap, for good measure. Does the heat riser still work? Or has it been de-activated or was removed when the dual exhaust was installed?

Just some thoughts,

Thanks for responding. Good point on the heat riser. It is still working properly. I am looking into the heat wrap idea.
