So I just found out the New Yorker needs a transmission and was wondering if any 727 will work or do I need one from specifically from a big block? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Rebuild yours. The kits are roughly around $200 I have a trans guy who I pay $400 to do it as a side job at the dealership he works at. He picks the trans & parts up. Brings it back in about a week. All clean & fresh. $600 & a saturday I'm done

Yea.. there's a good idea there.

What's wrong with the trans? Typical problem is it won't go in reverse.

It needs some internal seal that isnt sold by itself and then the entire tranny needs ripped apart to replace it. I do not know how to work on transmissions.

There are basically 3 different 727 Transmissions: small block, big block, and AMC. The bells on them are different for each, and are a part of a one-piece case, which is why you must be specific. The one for AMC, from 1972 and newer, is internally the same, but the bolt patterns are completely different, and the starter is on the passenger side for an AMC, as opposed to the driver's side for Mopars.

Reading what others have posted, unless you can get a decent, used 727 for less than a rebuild, I would agree with the rebuild. The same labor is going to be needed to remove the transmission regardless of what you do, so half of it is finished in a rebuild.
