Not being a Chevy guy I dont know... I suppose there were other tell tale signs, VIN or a dual exhaust perhaps. I dont recall seeing a 402 emblem on an Impala..... I believe they put the engine in Novas, Chevelles, Monte Carlos and Trucks...

my block was a spring 1972 casting, VIN matched, with casting number 3999290.

my understandng was it was used in cars and trucks and when in certain cars it had a "hi-po passenger car" designation.

over 15,000+(?) 402's wound up in chevy "passenger cars" in '72 to my recollection when i researched it a few years back.

Nothing that can't be reversed, boys...He probably has the original 14" wheels and tires. Have YOU tried to purchase 14" tires lately??? A lot of these full-size cars are running these big-*** wheels and rubber-band tires, because that is what is available.

So, are people following tires or are the tires following the car.
Are cars following the people....

By your lack of punctuation I'm assuming you're not actually looking for an answer.

Nope. Just running the " What came first. The chicken or..." through my head.
Mental masturbation.

Nice car! :)

I don't want to knit pick but, the 400 and 402 weren't the same engine. The 400 was a member of the small block 283,327,350 family of engines. The 402 was a big block, part of the 396,427,454 family of engines.

Thanks a lot for this info. I never knew there was a GM 402 cu. in big block. Given that they had a 396, you gotta wonder why they did the 402. Was it an attempt to lengthen the stroke and reduce the bore to make for a cleaner running engine, or what ?

In 1970 they came out with the 400 small block. They didn't want a small block with a bigger displacement than a big block.....bore the 396 and keep it simple.

I was very impressed with the 402 first time I was exposed to one 35 years ago......just impressive

Did they bore out the 396, or did they change the stroke ? Anybody know bore / stroke specs for the 396 and the 402?

I have read the bore size is bigger.... don't quote me on it though

yep. it was a 396 bored 30 over. badged "396" in mid-size cars, badged "400" in certain full-size cars (e.g., "sport" models - yes, monte carlo - no badge) and called "Turbo Jet 400", and badged "402" in trucks. available in two and four bolt mains.

why do a 402 when GM had a 396? marketing maybe due to all the engines they had, plus emissions "trickery" may have something to do with it. the absolute performance gain from extra cubes (absent other changes in heads/cam, etc if any versus a 396) may not have been more than 10 horses if that?

GM had a ban on their mid-sized cars on anything over 400 cubes. Each division "bent" the edict.

" 1970 saw the introduction of the most powerful Chevelle SS of all time. Responding to the lifting of GM's ban on engines larger than 400 cid in midsize cars, Chevrolet responded by dropping in a..."

thats in there too..yup.

they still had multi-hundreds (maybe more) factory engine build combinations across the six brands (chev, buick, etc) in this era. so policing the "fiefdoms" inside the company was a challenge.

Here's another near-donk.
