68 Newport Custom

Thanks I can't believe its a local Sudbury car either but after researching, it was purchased at Laurentian Chrysler on the Kingsway in Sudbury in Oct. 1967 and has never left the city. In the pics I showed you can see on the trunk lid the decal on the far left shows the original Laurentian Chrysler logo put on all new purchases. I almost don't want to remove it.....but I will....lol

No plans to sell....lol still drooling over the fact I found it and talked the owner into selling it...Does anyone know what I have for a rear end and gears? I'm not sure if its a base set having the 383 two barrel or does it change with the 4 barrel and change again with the TNT 440 option? So much to think about....only 40-50 years left to decide what to do about it....lol

You'll have to look underneath to see the tag on the rear, it will tell you the number if it still attached. The build sheet will also reveal the gears in the rear. Anything could be in there, depends how it was ordered up.

The original owner tells me not a thing was ever added or changed its 100% original so i'll have to dig to see what the 383's options were...thanks for the advice I'll have to find a skinny mopar buddy to crawl under there tomorrow for a peak lol

Did you ever figure out what you have for rear gears?

Stock 68' 383?? 290hp? Thought it was a little more than that......a bit more compression for the garden variety 68' 383...even w/ the 2bbl...300hp, no?

290 2bbl with log exhaust manifolds, 300 4bbl with log manifolds, 330 4bbl and hp exhaust manifolds, 335 4bbl hp manifolds in a roadrunner or super bee, I think!!!! There is a cam change in there also.

All the research I've done on the stock 383 with the 2 barrel is 290 horse. That's actually higher than the 383's up to 67 as they had 270 horse with the same 2 barrel set up. I'm of course going to be installing a performer intake with 4 barrel and doing a mild cam change and adding dual exhaust. I don't need to be doing 300 mph but I do want a nice punch and rumble if I need it or if a pretty girl walks by LOL

I have no idea what gears I do have I'm assuming garden variety as the car is 100% stock and unchanged since new. I'm also too thick to crawl under there to start looking either so my mechanic will find out for me when i'm ready to do a diff rebuild...

I know for sure after 70' the 2bbl 383 is hitting 290 horses. It will wake up nicely with the performer parts. I really want are some better gears...2:71 (I think) will take you to the limit on the speedometer no problem and the motor will still have some rpms left in it to go. However, not so much over short range....like trying to start off quickly on a bicycle in 12th gear.

Lift up the rear put a mark on the drive shaft and count how often it goes around for each rotation of the rear tire assuming you are running close to original diameter rubber.
