68 Polara convertible advise needed

Hi, I have had a 64 b body for years and done lots of upgrades. There is a 68 Polara convertible for sale locally for $5300. What is a price for one in driver shape? Did these cars come with a 383, thought it was a 440? Anything in particular to watch for? Cowl and 1/4's are good rust free as is trunk and floor pans. Anything on the top to watch for ? Will be my first convertible. Any parts way expensive or unatainuem for this car?

That looks like a great price for that car.

They came with a number of motors, including the 318. Here's some pics of one I saw at a show some years back with the small block in it, factory. Some will say for certain, I think this one was a '67. Obviously modified with newer seats and other goodies, car was still beautiful.

No reproduction sheet metal produced. A quick search on ebay will give you an idea of what is available for used parts and what the prices you could expect to pay. I say go for it.

I used to have a red 68 Polara convertible. Should have never sold it, I loved that car. Didn't have any garage space at my Condo so it sold to Germany. Now I have a five car shop so this won't happen again.
 
Inspect thoroughly for rust as convertibles very often rust from the inside out. Such elegant styling that year. I was obsessed with drawing them when I was a young kid.
 
The white small block car is not a 67. 67's had round instrument clusters. 68's are rectangular like this one.

There are reproduction quarters available for the 67-68's but they are junk. Horribly misformed and unusable. They are not even suitable as patch material. Better off forming your own patches. If this one has good sheet metal, that is the main thing.

Rusty gas tanks, burned valves from no available leaded gas, power steering pumps, poor stopping ability, rear wheel bearings where the grease is dried out (they are sealed units), weak fuel pumps, and fuel system losing its prime after 24 hours of sitting. The 67-68 cars really need disc brake conversions.

First make sure it is safe, then ask yourself, "does the fuel gauge work?"

Sometimes there is hidden rust that is only visible if the tail lights are removed, or if you are in the trunk use a mirror and flash light under the ledge.

Looks like it was original TT-1 medium green. Would look sharp with a white top.

And black with a black interior, you won't have to worry about your pizza getting cold !
Absolutely, no A/C, black interior and black roof are a deadly combination. Mine was OK in the east, but as soon as I moved west to higher elevations and more intense UV the car became unbearable on bright sunny days.

I didn't step back far enough to take a pic of the end of the fenders to see a side marker light. So, I really didn't know what year it was.
 
The car looks solid from what i can see. The convertables will get more money ,also easier to sell . The engine bay looks real nice. As well as the interior. The price seems pretty good but if it was me i get it down lower. The white one looks like a 68 500. I love mine . Rides like your on a cloud. Buy and enjoy.

From the pictures the engine install looks right. The Turquoise blue is the right color for the 383 in 68. On the fender tag, you should be able to find if the 383 is original for that car. Based on the single snorkel air cleaner, my assumption is that it is a two barrel ( although I don't believe mine ever had the 383 pie tin on top) If it is a 2 barrel 383 the fender code bottom line should be DL2? (can't remember if the convert is DL21) 61 (383 2bbl) 5 auto transmission....

As for parts, I have seemed to find a few here and there. Mechanical parts didn't seem to be a problem. There are also a few dash panels and switches out there. There are absolutely no original style seat covers available for the bench seat. ( at least I haven't been able to find any), and I have given up on finding the plastic covers for the seat hinge on the bench. They seem to be unique to C- body bench seats and maybe even to the Dodge, as many of the Fury's and NYers use chrome. A, B, and E- body covers are smaller.
Chrome trim pieces show up from time to time, but it seemed like even for my two door hard top there are different trim pieces dependent on whether or not you had wheel well trim.
