i've seen lots of pictures over the years of original cars. sometimes the panel under the grill is silver, sometimes body color. what's the deal? assembly plant, date of production or ???

Good question, I've always wondered the same thing. I've had 2 of them over the years, both original pain and original cars. One Sport Fury and one Fury III and both had the Silver panel below the grille.

I always wondered about that. It looks good either way depending on color so I figured it depends on the original color. My body shop had the solution to that problem. They just painted everything red.
My late production SF has the silver painted panel. My car was never repainted, approx. 58k original mile car. This is a pic when it was posted in CL. I just had a thought. Mine has the M43 grill trim moldings. Chrome around the grill on the leading edge of the hood and fenders. Does anyone have one with a painted panel with the chrome trim?

Seems to work really well with the fancier 3D grill.
mine is a fury III, 4/1 build date, no spring special trim, silver panel. other than a styling exercise , i can't see any practical reason for it.
My Fathers 69 SF has that same trim level and his is painted silver also and has been that way since new...

It would be interesting to post build dates and assembly plants with each post.
Updated my post above with what I believe is any relevant information.
Here's another one I know of. This was a parts car that I bought parts from a few years ago. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to reinforce theories.....yet. Maybe determined by Belvedere production plant or color?

When they ran out of the correct color part a silver one was used.
That part was probably installed prepainted. I can’t imagine they mask off that small piece just to paint it silver.

For whatever reason the part was painted differently wouldn't matter to me on this one, I'd be painting it to match the body, period. I may be a purest but this one would bug me, document it,paint it and move on.
This is a part that was painted off the car, like was said they may have run out of the correct color and used silver? that would mean they would need an abundance of silver, why not just have plenty of each color?

Another possibility is this part was painted loose. Like a fuel door, it might have been painted with the car, hung on a bracket, and was damaged somehow.
A piece like this sure isn’t gonna stop the line. That part gets installed in what ever color they have left.
I kinda like the silver on a VIP. The front end looks richer imo.
