70 and 71 Fury bumpers the same?

I can pick up this 71 FuryIII for $700. Trouble is, I have always liked the 1970 hidden headlight set-up better. How hard to make the switch? Are the bumpers the same? It sure looks like it. Grill pieces look like you can find them, but what about the mechanisms? I'm sure I'm not the first to propose such a thing. Any help appreciated.

This car is complete, 383, and only rust is passenger's quarter.

yes you can swap...doing similar to my 70...just gotta grab yourself a parts list and start gatherin parts...buldge hood will swap to

'71 hideaways look great also and I would suspect easier to find than a 1970

The front bumper is the same in the 70 to 71 models but all the bracketry behind for the grille assys are totally different, I have done this swap before so i can tell you when it comes to putting in the hideaway headlight system make sure you get not only the electric motor and its mount but also all the framework behind the bumper that holds the headlight assys in place. Not to mention the switch assy and wiring that feeds back to the firewall.

Oh yes, I like that bulge hood, too. On one hand, I could hold out for a 70, but this one is such a deal and no transportation costs. Maybe I'll just get used to the 71 grille!!

70 Comparison

I did this conversion on my 70 vert. The regular 70 grill is in front. I suspect it is structurally the same as your 71 grill. The 70 hidden headlight grill is in back. You also need a HL motor relay that goes under the dash. Hope this helps. I'd beware of that grill in NY. It needs repair and may be missing lots of hard to find parts.

However, the difference is between standard grill and hideaway grille - and the structure behind it, has has been written above. Not sure, but I would think that the headlights in cars with the hideway grille do sit a little further back to accomodate the headlight door and mechanism, compared to the location of the headlights in standard grille cars. I'd have to check with part numbers of the sheetmetal brackets/headlight pods to know more. But anyone who already converted a standard grille car to hideaway grille should know from personal experience.

You're right, on my 70 Fury the hidden headlights do mount farther back. The bases on which the head light cups mount are different, although the difference is not that great. Also, the 3 large vertical brackets off the front of the radiator support are the same. On my 70 Fury the front loop bumper were also the same, except that the non hidden HL bumper had those awful horizontal guard black rubber strips on it that act as a water holder and rust catalyst for the hapless chrome behind.

I don't know about the 70 hideaways, but the 71 has the brush's that clean the headlights.

The 70 hideaways do not have that brush set up. I removed mine from a 1970 Sport Fury. No brushes present. They seem like a waste of time anyway. Why does anyone need brushes for headlights?

The headlight brushes were a new-for-1971 option for cars with hideaway headlights (Sport Fury, Chrysler 300, Imperial). It was an option, not all 71 Sport Furys have it.

The idea behind it was that cars witch regular grilles get their headlights cleaned every time the car is washed. But with hidden headlights, dirt might accumulate over time when the lights are on during the night. Then when the car gets washed during the day, the headlights stay behind their door - and dirty. To compensate, the headlight cleaning setup was developed. It would operate when the headlights are on and the windshield washer is used.

Well, I'm going to have to pass on this Fury. I already have 15 cars in the yard, and haven't done anything with them. I need to start working on them instead of piling them up! If anyone else is interested, let me know. Car is in Las Vegas, NM; not Nevada. I haven't done any kind of extensive inspection, like frame rails or anything. He wants $700
