I have a '68 Sport Fury and my tranny is like a mushy bowl of cereal. It's all there but it doesn't work that great. Am looking at rebuild vs replacement. If it's original I need to rebuild and if not then I can just replace it.

This is my Stamping Number: J2801543 3697174.
The 2801543 matches my year and my stock 383.
The 10,000 day date code tells me a date in '71 which doesn't make sense unless it's a rebuilt transmission.
Lastly the J is the mark I have not figured out at all. Is it an actual factory (not Kokomo) or a rebuild stamp which would make the '71 date make sense?

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know about the J but the 2801543 is for a 67-68 383 2bbl for Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth.

If it feels a bit mushy try performing a fluid change band adjustment and kickdown lever adjustment before tearing it down completely. all can be done with the trans still in the car. you will have to drop the pan to do the low reverse adjustment. some torqueflites have a drain plug on the torque convertor so you can drain the fluid.
