This car is 2 miles from me I'm gonna check it out this weekend. Maybe drag her home. What's your guys' opinions? He states in the ad that the torsion bars are broke so im assuming the crossmember is shot...

That's why the car is still in one piece...
The derby guys did not bite should it have a rotten stub frame.
Imperials may be banned from some derbies, but the rules did not state you cannot put an Imp's stub under a C that is allowed to run....

There's actually an imperial only derby in my area every year. Sad! I talked to the guy he says the subframe is solid... Just the torsion bar is broken... I'm gonna take a closer look tomorrow. I'll keep you guys updated. I really would hate to see another imperial derbied!

Never saw a torsion bar break.
I did. 72 Swinger broke 3 inches behind the control arm left side. With a big BANG,down she went.
F bodies were famous for breaking the transverse mounted torsion bars.
It must be our cold climate...

I see some of good parts on this one including the rh mirror.

Never saw a torsion bar break.

They can and do, just like a leaf spring or a coil spring can also break. My bro-in-law car-sat my Coronet in 1980 while I was stationed in Alaska. He drove it to a softball game he was in, and afterwards he sat on the right front fender to drink his beer, when the car went three inches to the ground and a long "bang" under the hood. He's 150 soaking wet, so he's not a big guy at all. BUT, the torsion bar broke! He worked at a C-P dealer as the parts manager. He drove it to work and put it on the lift. Turned out my big-block car had the correct diameter DS torsion bar, but on the right side was one for a 225 car...smaller diameter! He replaced both as a precaution, though only the right side broke.

So. Yeah, they break! That's why you want to remove and install a torsion bar carefully! If you nick or scratch one, you make a weak spot where corrosion takes hold. Eventually, it's gonna go from that point.

A couple of years ago I helped a 70 Lebaron owner to get another torsion bar for his car. From Murray Park IIRC...

Oh yeah, the original one was broken all right.

So I looked at the car today. Both torsion bars are broke. Rear springs are shot. He claims the 440 turns over but I could not get it to. Rear quarters are hashed. Front and rear floors are very rusty. I can't get in the trunk but I'm sure that's rusty too. Looks like a lot of good parts. This would even be too rusty for a derby guy.
