I purchased a 4 speed transmission and now am trying to figure out the original vehicle it was in using the stamped numbers on the pad on the side of it. Does anyone know how to do this or where I can look to find out?
Stamped on main case:
8B375XXX (Last three digits not listed)
PP83 4219
Thanks for any/all help.
Mark

First of all, a good picture of it will get us 95% of the way there to knowing what it's from.
After the picture, the last 5% becomes moot anyway.
What do you want to stick it into by the way?
Post a pic please and welcome to FCBO.

8B375XXX is the partial vin of the car and the only thing that tells you is it's a '68 Hamtramck built car. The other numbers you have there are incomplete as well but its a series that basically denotes what you already know, that its an A-833 and there appears to be as many as 5 numbers missing, 4 of them being the date code. You will never be able to tell what it came out of exactly, the best you can do is find out what model line was being built at the Hamtramck plant in '68 and I think the answer to that is B-bodies.

Matt's right. Seems like just about every A833 out there came from B-bodies. And all the B-body 4 speeds interchange the the C-bodies.

The most important issue is most of the cases are the same, just different tail shaft lengths and shifter locations.
Also, the front bearing retainer came in different diameters but that's an easy swap.

That's why I said up front we needed one.
I ain't seeing any pic yet...

1971– 1974 A-body
Tailshaft: Short
Shifter mounting location: Behind the cross member mounting pad.
Case side cover: 71+ style.
And somewhere on the case there HAS to be a seven digit casting number beginning with the number "2".
But it's a moot point. The case could have bee used on anything.

If you measure the Bearing Retainer Diameter, it should be 4.35" and that will confirm it.

See? A picture is worth a thousand words.

I want to put the transmission in my 1971 340 Duster, that is what I am trying to figure out. If it will work without mods. It is an original 3 speed on the floor car.

You need a 4 speed small block bell housing and you'll be good to go.
You can do it in your sleep.

Moot point. Don't get obsessed with details that change nothing.
At this point, the bearing retainer casting number is the important thing to identify your internals in case of a rebuild.

Why are you asking on 2 different forums fbbo answered its a 73 they even gave you the 10000 day calender of feb 14 1973 happy valentines go put it in the duster will work fine no mods needed just a bell housing. If you would have asked the question at the start and posted pic this would not have taken more than 15 minutes.

I have 2 small block bell housings available, let me know if you need one.

Don't forget the rear engine mount might also be different. On the C Body 3 spd to 4 spd I had to get an extended version. Found one on ebay and as I recall it was pricey.

My conversion only needed a stock transmission mount.

Honestly I don't know how this continues, all transmissions 904,727,833,3-speeds all have same bell to mount distance. I have seen people selling a later crossmember (spool type) as a 4-speed piece and if you say something they just tell you thats what they took it off, yeah okay, sure.

Got me wondering now. Diagrams of these mounts in the service manual clearly shows the 4 speed mount extending about 2 inches further aft, and i have a NOS mount that is the longer one. Its been a few months but could have sworn i measured the bottom holes in the 833 tranny being further back from the front face than the 3 spd that came out. Gonna hafta check that again.
