Ive been browsing the forums for quite some time now, finally gave in and decided to make an account. My name is Paul, I live in South Carolina, I am 17. Alot of you may view me as young and inexperienced and while that holds true i am eager to learn. I purchased a 1977 Chrysler Newport 2 weeks ago. I am the fourth owner, and the car has 40,975 verified original miles. I believe the car to be mostly original, and it is fully intact. I have started on a minor restoration.
The story behind the car goes that some old lady bought the car and co signed it with her grandson so he would have a car to drive to college. After he was done with college she took the car back and drove it as her own, Until 1994. In 1994 she sold the car to the second owner, with 36,589 on the odometer. The second owner commuted a mile to church and back every Sunday, and ran occasional errands. Overall the car collected 1,400 miles in the span of 12 years. In 2006 the third owner purchased the car and drove it some, but never truly cared for the car. Overall he put right under 3,000 Miles on the car.
One day I was driving home from my friends house and I passed by this house which had 5 cars parked outside, 4 under a shed and one outside the shed. I would later find there were 7 cars in total on the property. One of the cars was my current car, a 1977 Chrysler Newport. There was also a 1972 AMC Ambassador, a 1982 Imperial, a 1962 Newport, a 1965 Belvedere II, a 1964 Dart, and a 1960's Chevy Corvair Panel Wagon, all of which i plan to buy in the future except the 62 Newport, which he refuses to sell.
My Newport is a Custom Sedan with the 400 4 barrel. I replaced the lean burn and electronic ignition for a points type distributor from a older 383 car and a different thermoquad from a 70 model 440.
I purchased the car for $1200, it has good tires and brakes and steering, so im all set there. i spent another $300 in the conversion, oil, and spark plugs and some other things to get it awoke from its slumber. So far im at $1500 even, I do need to replace the radiator so I suspect that to be another couple hundred bucks.
The Car is extremely straight, it has one minor dent behind the passenger side rear wheel cover, otherwhise the car is absolutely straight with 0 bondo. There is absolutely 0 rust on this car which is amazing, even considering the condition of the vynil top when i got the car, which was decayed and old. I spent a few hours at night with a flashlight peeling it off mostly by hand or carefully with a putty blade.
As far as future plans go, i just want to make the car look good and run good for now. after i get my other 2 trucks back on their legs i plan to replace the wimpy 400 for a 6 pack 440 from a 1968 model gtx, rated at 390 horsepower. I also plan to change the exhaust system to a older dual style exhaust with mufflers. A sort of surprisingly quick but still fairly tame land barge.
That should sum up everything I have to say.
Edit: weird story, the car is named blish because at night the car has this blue hue to the paint, sort of blueish but the car is burgandy, so i call the car blish.
