Howdy folks,

There's a decent chance that within the next few days I'll be looking at a '70 Plymouth Fury, and outside of paper knowledge (Engine, paint, features & options) and basic mechanical skills, I'm not 100% certain on what red flags to look out for. I know the quarter panels are guilty of rust and the rubber might be old and want to crack, but outside of a regular point inspection there's not much else that I know of.
Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

rear window channel and area,if it has a vinyl top,ANY bubbles is DANGER.my 2 cents…

Unibody condition, floors, trunk extensions as well as the trunk floors. Front suspension condition with torsion bar suspension set up's...upper and lower control arm bushing replacement are not for the faint of heart... and could be difficult to find a service center that would agree to do this work.

Good inputs from others.
Look at the operating systems (air conditioning, heat, radio, lighting.
I bought what I thought was a turnkey c body in 2018 and it had a number of issues in these areas that I have identified and mostly corrected myself.

If this is an Ontario car, structural rust will be your main concern. Mechanical stuff is really not a big deal (not even U or L CA bushings - I did those myself with minimal tools). The fit and finish of interior and exterior trim, dashboard, glass, don't expect to be able to find replacements in better shape than what you have. If the car has been under a roof for the past 40 years is something to hope for, or if this was a western plains or desert car for most of it's life up to now (but then sun damage interior could be significant). Some pics of what you're looking at or the history of the car would help narrow down the focus.

You wouldn't happen to be looking at this car maybe?

This one changed hands a couple years ago:

As others have said, rust and unique or hard to find model year parts are primary concerns on a 57ish year old car. If the car is complete and original there is almost nothing that can't be done/fixed.

Specific trouble spots I had on a 69 convertible is cowl rot and the rear well channel. Those are / can be hard to spot but for the rear well channel I'd lay in that trunk or get a camera up in there under the "dutchman" panel area. For the front ... i didn't know what i was dealing with until the glass was out and front clip was off. Look for any rust in the lower corners of the windshield maybe.and take a really good look under the hood at the cowl seam that runs just above the engine.

Also, this isn't a bad "so you're buying a classic car" type list (just a quick search - not an exhaustive review or analysis);

Classic Car Inspection Checklist - A Step by Step Guide

Good luck and happy hunting! Love cruising in my old convertible
