I have messed with this thing all day, putting a 4.10 R&P in,What is my next move?
I am thinking shim the carrier into the pinion gear.
PS my backlash is about 020 at this point
Any help is appreciated.

It is riding too high (Loose) .010 closer will probably be about right as it appears the bite is correct otherwise.

Thanks Dave, you are an asset to this forum.
So shimming the carrier over towards the pinion is what should happen?
It blows my mind how much knowledge you and others here have.

I have to set up a carrier bearing puller for my press,
looks like some threaded rod to fit in the separator and a couple small pieces of angle iron should work.
That and a couple bottle of Ibuprofen.....
Thanks again Dave.:thankyou:

Thanks guys.
Sage advice.
Just get new bearings and hone the old bearings out as slip bearings would have been the way to go.

After pressing the old, but good bearings on and off 4 times, I went and bought a new set anyways, just to make sure the old bearings hadn't tweaked.

After all was said and done, the carrier needed to be moved over into the pinion .030.
The end result was a pattern that was much wider than the pics above.
Anyone seeing this thread in the future, do yourself a favor and buy the Spicer/Dana brand R&P.
The hassle it would save is worth the $100.

The 4.10s are just what the doctor ordered.
New 60 foot times are in the 1.6s, still fighting traction issues though

Dana's can be a pain, if your going to do a lot of them set up bearings are a must. Good move replacing them after being on and off a few times.

Ok so back to this project.
I put the exhaust on for street driving, the deaccel is noisy as hell.
I moved the pinion away .010, the backlash is .006.
According to all the patterns I looked at, the first pattern was better.
The pattern is supposed to open up, make the teeth mesh more.
Am I moving in the right direction?
