Perhaps the car is 'certified' that it is an original Pacesetter, and not necessarily 100% original in details?

As for the unsilenced being required in 65 California, I wonder if that means the unsilenced with the PCV hose nipple? I don't recall ever seeing that silenced type to have a nipple on it. Perhaps the PCV nipple is the reason?

I don't know about C-bodies, but my '65 Formula S Barracuda was sold new in California. It has an unsilenced air cleaner with a hose nipple going to the valve cover breather.

I did some research and according to a bunch of folks, that was "correct" for 1965 California cars. (a pic from when I first bought the car, it's been cleaned up with some corrections now)

My 300L, sold new in New York State, has an unsilenced air cleaner with no nipple.

I have a friend that has 3 nipples, but that's another story.
