Barn Find 1969 Daytona Charger

The big-winged muscle car was purchased earlier this year from its second owner, an Alabama man who bought it for $1,800 in 1974 and promptly had a set of flames painted on its front fenders to turn things up to 11 for a spring break trip to Panama City.
He kept it running up until four years ago, parking it under an open side shed for good after a minor accident flattened its pointy nose. (The auction photos were clearly staged in a different location after the sale.) Nevertheless, the red coupe has just 20,553 miles on its numbers-matching 440 Magnum V8, and features the rare combination of bucket seats and a console-mounted 3-speed automatic transmission.

The odometer might say 20,553, but the seats, door panels and arm rest, are screaming 120,553. Still a cool find.

While I was in the Army, I was TDY at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1977 (my first time at APG) for some special training. The "Center Gate" which was on a small road that went over a bridge that went up and over train tracks. One evening after dinner heading back to the Proving Ground I saw a Superbird wing sticking out of a garage as I was going over that bridge. It was on private property adjacent to the train tracks. I tried to find out who owned that car and if it was for sale. I asked numerous locals at the bars and restaurants in the area about the Superbird. All said the same thing....the car was (I forgot the name) son's car. Died in Vietnam in late 1971 and the Dad just parked the car and it wasn't for sale. I seen the car there throughout the 1980's when I would return for various training and it disappeared when the wing car prices skyrocketed.

This Daytona...
How could you tell?... :D

Well if you look it Really isn't "all original" Someone Put those Retarded Flames on it.

But it still looks pretty Untouched for the most part, Even the Original Air Cleaner.

The paint was done before the value was there, don't like it, but I understand... the total lack of preservation baffles me, these have been valuable cars for a long time... I think your an a@#hole if you stick something in the dirt and mice just to hoard it. Even pavers and rat poison would show more concern... stupid stubborn people... and yes the dumbass who pays big $ for this deserves to lose money on his restoration flip... He probably will buy it hoping he can be on TV GraveClown Yards or something...

Rant over

A Well Spoken Rant Catnip, But The important thing is The Car Got Saved and that is all that matters at the end of the day.

Back in the 80's, there was a blue one running around, without the nose cone & more recently a guy nearby had a yellow Superbird with a 440 & auto on the column.

Seems to me that without history or an interesting backstory, this car is just rust with a wing. To properly "fix" will basically require a re-body and a lot of faith that someone with really deep pockets will "appear" to bail you out. Not this cowboy.

45 years ago Wing cars were rare and seldom seen.....I remember them like it was yesterday!

45 years from now you young guys will be bantering here on FCBO about Hellcats and how you remember when they were new cars and seldom seen.....

If no one is motivated enough at the upcoming auction, someone should post a spoof on Craigslist...

"PARTING OUT 69 Daytona...No motor or transmission, rest of the car is available for parts.
Bought the car for the 440 motor, to be installed in my 71 Newport project car.
Mostly complete, body panels rusty. Pics available on request.
Local pickup only.... Cletus 484-7272

I can't believe the amount of discussion for what is obviously junk. I'm with 73Coupe: Part it/ Scrap it and throw the drive train in a C body.

I think you gentlemen will be surprised at the sale price. I also applaud anyone willing to restore this Daytona,..it takes a lot of time and energy and desire to.get it done.

Don't forget the key factor: MONEY. It will take $100-$150K to make that car right.

Don't forget they serve adult beverages. Years ago when I shipped my Pantera, the truck driver and me talked for some time. He said when he went to the bathroom at Barrett Jackson, 2 guys were busy trying to top each other, drunk, on what they could buy. Ego > sense. The real reason you take a pile of scrap metal like this car to an auction, is there is no way it would sell for anything elsewhere.

Someone with serious interest in wanting a Daytona to restore would pay a fair price for this car. Barrett Jackson not necessary. IMO, BJ is just a circus. That being said, you're right. If they get two drunk idiots in the room that want it, it could sell for way more than it is worth. The "winner" will wake up with a lot more than a hangover.

A circus is right. An atmosphere that creates its own hype and promotes delusion and impairment.

This is why they serve you free drinks at casinos when you're gambling.
