I think the Lincoln Continentals modeled themselves after the formal cars. The 75/76/77 Lincoln Continental front is almost a dead ringer.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. I guess what goes around, comes around... Word has it that the 60's Lincolns were Elwood Engel's inspiration for the slabs. Stands to reason, since he was instrumental in the design of the Lincolns too.

Lack of adequate funding for design as literally all money had to be spent to meet rapidly changing expensive Federal mandates on safety, fuel economy, and emmision standards.

Ah, poor planning in other words.
 
Shame....would have loved to see what the fuselage design would have evolved into rather than making an abrupt change like it did....absolutely no resemblance between the two design styles....unlike the slab cars which evolved into the fuselage cars.
