Making the conversion to Big Block 440 in my 71. Just collecting parts to make the swap this winter. Please correct me if I'm wrong TTI seems to be the only source for an RB . Schumacher I think would probably be my 1st pick but they seem to be out of stock on alot of their items (did they go out of business?). The other option is custom which is probably out of the question unless a B body set could be modified easily.

Have you checked if Hooker is still available?

I do see hooker 5113hkr. I have been looking around and hadn't found anyone who said they used them with success. I guess you have been happy with them ?

I have them as well. Had them Jethot coated. Fitment is good with an RB engine.

I've been dealing with headers for over 40 years, both cheap speedshop junk and serious racecar stuff like Casler, Jardine and Gebler. I'm quite impressed by the fitment and robustness of these Hookers on my 440. The only issue--which isn't surprising at all--is that the starter can't be removed with the headers in place. However, I'm pretty sure that there are few applications for any brand of pipes on any make of car that don't infringe on the starter's real estate, ESPECIALLY our torsion bar cars.

Is a mini-starter captured by them, or just the OEM big-boy?

Would seem like there is surely some combination of u-joint, swivel socket, crowsfoot, etc, that would get in there, but I believe your assessment.

I was looking through your drawers and saw everything I mentioned and then I was like 'yahbut, where's the...' and then I saw it.

The wobble extensions.

An offset rachet. Wish I had one, looks handy.
Offset and relocatable vs the turning axis. It's an okay tool, not totally necessary. I generally use it due to the longer handle for higher torque issues. But yeah, in odd situations, the relocatable handle can be useful.

I love the wobble stuff. Very useful. Snap-On would NOT approve of such things.

But back to the headers. Supposing you install a reliably rebuilt Big Boy, or an mini unit. And then the headers. Ask yourself how many starts are you going to get before that starter fails and you have to undo the headers to get it out. 1000? 5000? How many years is that for our collector cars? A decade or two? Yup.

So....get the good headers, install a good starter and love life. If the starter fails (unlikely), then you're out a $30 gasket-set to make things right.

Do you happen to have a pic of your install? Or maybe you know the answer. Do the Hooker headers locate to the outside of the torsion bar or inside. I'm assuming the drop down between torsion bad and trans and cross over to the outside near the the transmission gear selector . I'm trying to figure out shifter linkage ( Ultrabell has no provisions) and I dont have motor back yet.

Inside, and they don't really "cross over to the outside near the the transmission gear selector". They generally sweep straight back once they clear the T-bars.

For street headers (meaning NOT race car fenderwell headers), I've only seen one application of a tube going outside a T-bar and that was on an A body with a 340. One tube went outside and it had a slip-joint where it met the rest of the bundle below the T-bar. Ask me if that slip-joint went "pffft, pffft, pffft, pffft, pffft......,,,".
