Big road bump in the Stub Frame project..

As far as what you find on CL, there ain't a 440 out there that should be bought more than a bare block needing machining
Hmm i do have a basically complete 440 engine filled to the brim with oil to preserve it, i am sure i could find a trans laying around too. whats shipping like from state to state for engines on a pallet?

For the money and customs issues it might be cheaper/easier to drive it, just a weekend trip.

precisionengines.com has decent prices though i've never tried them. Might be worth a shot!

I would go with a donor 440 drivetrain. Less than $1000 for a running donor car. 440's are pretty tough and you can probably get away with replacing gaskets and a new oil and water pump, timing chain set. Shipping is relatively cheap on a pallet or a crate. I shipped a 8'x4'x4' crate from El Paso, Tx to Aberdeen, Maryland that weighed 575 lbs for a little over $400.

You can always build the donor 440 down the road as a winter project.

Good morning everyone!:icon_sunny:

Well the sun is shining here in my part of the world this morning again because I have good news in respect to this road bump!

A local 65 Dodge Polara owner whom I had met a few times last year at various car events contacted me last night.

He has a Poly 318 with 727 transmission that has been in storage for about 2 years now that he has offered me. :)

He tells me that it was rebuilt a few years before the original owner past on from this world & this PO was right on with the maintenance having records to prove the service history.
The engine used no oil or any leaks as well according to the conversation I had with him last evening.
He drove his 65 with this combination for 1 1/2 years with the intention of dropping a 383 package into the car. - which he did.
Tells me it just needs a bit of a scrub down to freshen up the paint

Total price of the Poly with transmission, carb, alt, starter, dist, exhaust manifolds, stub frame(has some rot), torsion bars, suspension bits....?

$500cdn

I was quite pleasantly surprised when he stated the price since I have been seeing old poly's for sale between $800 to 1500 locally and they looked like they had rolled out of a Christine horror movie!:spider2:

I think it is well worth the price even if it proves to use oil or whatever, I can then concentrate on the original engine while getting to drive the car then swap it out next year.

- I pick the package up 04/01/2014 - he is currently in Florida until that date - I could pick it up earlier if I need to which I may..
It all depends if i am ready to move forward with the installation at this time.

Step in chit and come out smelling like a rose. Congrats.

Call it luck or otherwise, we all need a break from time to time. When the time comes along, I will give someone in need a break just like I got.

I always feel it is better to rebuild, refurbish, restore, refinish what you have you already knew you engine's problems. Unless you want to go bigger but that's a whole other project that can be dealt with later if you chose. Since you got a deal on a runner to stick in its the obvious choice. With regards to your Questions you really don't need a balance job, it was good for factory right. Boring is conditional shops all want to bore everything because then they sell you pistons, marked up double and make more money, if the pistons came out without having to cut ridge or no ridge at all you have a good candidate for hone only, lastly hardened valve seats are more required to run big h.p. springs if you are staying close to or stock there is really no need, yes they will wear but everything wears, hell I'm more worn than I was 20 years ago, so if you are planning on hot rodding yes, if yours are really worn from super high mileage yes, if your planning on running 15,000-20,000 miles a year yes

I gotta' get caught up to some of you senior members! :D

The economy made things unbearable. Found a good place two years ago ( I got lucky)........posts have fallen off over the last six months, NO TIME
