NOT MINE Blue 1971 Plymouth Fury, Three On The Tree!

I don't think they were wrong. I heard it from a few people. I was told by an "old timer" only our marked cars had body color wheels back then. The unmarked had black wheels. I dismounted the 20 year old tires this weekend and the inside is black so apparently that is the original color.

The problem with anecdotal stories is they are often not based on any real research or facts but just casual observations.
The problem becomes when memories are passed on as facts and get 'mis remembered' over time.
While the actual application of painted wheels is another topic of research (which cars actually got what), documentation provided by Chrysler shows that painted wheels were available after 1970.

Memories fade, documentation is forever.

Did you check the date code on the rims to see if they were potentially the original wheels?

Yes, I was told painted wheels became an option.

Then we should be able to find a reference to this on factory info such as order guides, data books, salesman pocket books, fleet buyers guides, window stickers et al.

IF this was true, then we should be able to prove it.

12 15 70 date code. Production date of the car is 2 18 71. It makes sense these are the wheels the car was built with. Considering the entire wheel is black inside and out, I'm convinced the car rolled out of the Newark Delaware plant with black wheels. First coat of satin black was applied.

Paint'em black. They look more badazz and absolutely no one will care/wonder about the wheel color.

Text from the ad.

IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE ACCESSORY BUMPER GUARDS, THIS WOULD QUALIFY AS A "ZERO OPTIONS" CAR. THERE IS NO POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OR A/C. NOT EVEN AN AM RADIO WAS IN PLACE WHEN THIS PLYMOUTH LEFT THE FACTORY AND NO RADIO EQUIPMENT WAS INSTALLED OVER THE YEARS. THE DRIVETRAIN FEATURES CHRYSLER'S 225 INCH VERSION OF THE SLANT SIX DRIVING THRU A THREE SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION WITH COLUMN MOUNTED SHIFTER.

THE CAR WAS ACQUIRED IN 2018 FROM A MINNESOTA COLLECTOR WHO OWNED IT FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS ADDING VERY LITTLE MILEAGE TO THE CAR. CURRENT READING IS 37336. THE MINNESOTA TITLE INDICATED "ACTUAL MILEAGE". CURRENT PENNSYLVANIA TITLE, IN MY NAME, SHOWS "MILEAGE EXEMPT" DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. A STATEMENT WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE PURCHASER INDICATING THAT PRESENT ODOMETER READING IS BELIEVED TO REFLECT ACTUAL ACCUMULATED MILEAGE.

THIS PLYMOUTH WAS REFINISHED ONCE IN THE ORIGINAL COLOR BEFORE THE GENTLEMAN FROM MINNESOTA GOT THE CAR AND APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN DONE IN AIR-DRY ENAMEL. USE OF A POLISH CONTAINING MILD ABRASIVE RESULTS IN SOME BLUE COLOR APPEARING ON THE APPLICATOR. THERE IS NO INDICATION OF PREVIOUS REPAIR OF RUST-THRU ANYWHERE ON THE CAR. THERE IS A SHALLOW DENT ABOVE THE WHEEL OPENING ON THE RIGHT FENDER WITH NO BREAK IN THE PAINT. PHOTOS DO NOT PICK THIS UP. THIS WOULD BE AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR PAINTLESS DENT REPAIR IF DESIRED.

THE 15 INCH TIRES IN PLACE HAVE WHAT LOOKS TO BE PLENTY OF TREAD BUT ARE KNOWN TO BE OVER 20 YEARS OLD. TREAD IS PULLING AWAY FROM TIRE BODIES. FOR SAFETY, PLEASE PLAN TO TRANSPORT ON A TRAILER OR FLATBED. HORN IS NOT FUNCTIONAL AT PRESENT. THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE WINDOW REGULATOR ON THE LEFT FRONT DOOR AND THE HEATER CORE LIKELY NEEDS REPLACEMENT.

THE CAR IS PRESENTLY IN STORAGE IN A FRIEND'S BARN IN NIAGARA COUNTY, NEW YORK. IT IS ABOUT 3 HOURS FROM MY LOCATION. I WILL GLADLY MEET YOU THERE BY APPOINTMENT TO SHOW THE PLYMOUTH. ONE DAY ADVANCE NOTICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. QUESTIONS TO BOB

Minnesota collector? Was this a @billyfury car?
A very rare and interesting car. I have just bought a 71 Fury Custom which is essentially a Fury 1 with a lot of extras including 360 V8, automatic trans, bright work, carpets, paisley vinyl interior and top, AC and much more. I sure wish my door cards were as nice!

Alerting @70 Sport Suburban as many 1970-1971 Fury parts cars go through his hands, and might just have the ticket.

Painted wheels (not exact color)
It's amazing how much dressier the car looks with just body coloured wheels and whitewalls! Such a big impact for such a small change. I certainly agree to keep it original, as that's my jam, but I can see why some may have been annoyed if they didn't order wheel covers and ended up with black wheels after seeing coloured wheels in years prior.
