You've probably seen those commercials with the super-annoying jingle that gets stuck in your head like a tumor... Wayfair.com sells furniture and art and other junk like that. (I guess?) Tonight I happened to look up at the TV at just the right moment and spot the usual metro-looking dude skipping around in his apartment, singing about free shipping.

On the wall I notice a picture that looks familiar... Ain't that a Monaco? Now that takes a damn good eye, because a 27" sewer-hole is the largest I'll allow in the house, so this pic was probably 2" on my screen, but lo and behold I found it on their website:

So who is going to be the first to get one?

BTW, here is the catalog they stole it from:

On a similar obscure note, can anybody tell what city that is in the background? Definitely not Detroit. Doesn't look Midwestern because it seems to be in a valley. Pretty big logos on those buildings which usually says "casino city", but in '73 who had those except Nevada and NJ? Somebody here must know that skyline... Maybe it's in Finland, lol?

(you can blow the pic up nice and big on the Wayfair site)

Jersey didnt get Casinos until Resorts opened in 77 and those are all at the beach

its on a big river (right side, and left side, midline of photo). third photo is of the only partially legible markings ..still can't read 'em.

obviously taken from a hill close to the downtown, there is also a major freeway/interstate between the cars and the city (long exposure photo shows ribbon of light from headlights, two of the typical green street signs far right).

Scientific W.A,G. -- its on the Ohio or Mississippi River (or a big tributary of same - Miami or, Scioto in Ohio that made a sizeable valley e.g.,) given the geography (big river with flanking hills, and a mid-west based company in Chrysler - easy to get cars to photo without a lotta cost)

somebody will nail it though...

I'm going to spend money on a nice picture suitable for framing of my NYB.

i believe this is Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. East of the Twin Cities, looking west. i've seen a similar view from I-94, which wouldn't have been built yet in 1973

That sure sounds like a good guess, the water features look similar. A very quick google search turned up this image, supposedly from the mid 70s, no idea from what direction.

This is a kinda fun game...

Twin Cities good guess too. Might not even be US .. maybe Canada?

The neon signs (still a big clue as noted already) just aren't readable, or maybe somebody has a better photo editor? If those signs can be read/recognized, this exercise becomes very easy. I blew pic up until I saw the pixels, adjusted sharpness, etc but still couldn't read them.

I could tell tallest building sign's (red and white) first word looks like "Big". The yellow sign mid-left looks like it has a "turtle" silhouette at the top (weird, but that's what it reminds me of), and then stocky rectangle building on the left has three words "something of something", and the last word starts with and "a" or an "s", second letter a "g" or a "q", and clearly ends in "e".

there's a whole bunch of little clues in the buildings that don't have signage -- the colors, architectural features, etc. that somebody FROM that city would surely recognize on sight.

I got a mental block, given geography and I have personally seen, for states of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, or Illinois, in 75,000+ people-sized city given what the downtown looked like back then, situated in a river valley (given hills on both sides of the river). There's another smaller city, or a bi-sected single city with a bunch of bridges, on the other side of the river -- could even be another state as is typical of some river borders.

That's all I got on this one .. hope somebody sorts it out :)

My gut feeling is that the neon is a distraction, and are added to the skyline photo. The advertising usually doesn't like to favour a specific location, so as to make everyone feel it could be their city. I think focusing on the actual skyline without the neon will lead to the answer, but I don't have it.

good point.. ad agency "photo-shopping" back in the day. Common then as now for the reasons you mentioned.

In fact, the red/white sign on the tallest building is covering TWO floors of windows ... possible but unlikely in real life.

Locals WILL know their skylines/geography .. that is likely the best chance to ID this place.

however if the neon is real , that big one looks like a Maple leaf so possibly canada

I saw that .. made me think "Big O Tires". But, i also noticed is a BIG sign .. covering up the topper facade and TWO floors of windows on that building.

yeah I saw your prior comment, that's why I said "if real it looks a maple leaf".

If it's neon people could see through it from the floors/windows behind it

yeah man, i was so busy trying to read it, it never occurred to me till 15 mins ago that I might be "tilting at windmills" with that effort :)

I think there is something to this... All that neon looks like Reno NV, but we know that isn't it. It's going to take a local to recognize this. I was hoping with our global reach somebody would see it and say "That's my old apartment building!"

And for me, the big sign looks like
****
Happens!
