Can anyone expain this USPS package delivery route?

I had an extreme routing/detour on a package of mine a couple of years ago that added about 4 days. I believe it started in California made it to KC. Then was routed to a Philippines distribution center then back to Salt Lake then finally to Fargo.

I bought something on ebay, it was in Florida, being shipped to Michigan. It's apparently being shipped by USPS. Can anyone explain the route the package is taking? It got to within 14 miles of it's destination and then took a thousand mile detour.

Well I don't know the routing of UPS, but since they have the postal contract now, sounds about right. FedEx did have the postal contract for many years. FedEx utilized it's airplanes during the day to move the mail, and since they fly to so many more destinations that UPS, they would fly the mail into so many more cities and you could actually get even those letters to a city pretty quick. UPS I'm sure is trucking the mail from point A to point B, and I bet the issue is all the stops or routes those trucks make. Why a package may move from point A to point C before actually going to point B, who knows. Lots of issues could have happened. Trailer your part was loaded on leaves point A, arrived to point B, everyone thought it was emptied. The trailer was going to be loaded and sent to point C, thinking it was loaded with freight for that point. When it arrived, the trailer is unloaded, not knowing that it was not unloaded and sorted, you package gets scanned and reloaded into a trailer coming back to point B, finally. It does happen.

The USPS processes over 420 million pieces of mail per day, and like many companies today, they have an employee retention rate problem. They have a retention rate of 47.8%. So for every 100 employees that are hired and go through training 52 quit. With the amount of mail/packages processed by them, you would think they need a stable trained work base for things to run efficiently.
