My 70 300 has a Thermoquad carb on it right now. It runs OK but it isn't the greatest. I've had TQ carbs before and gotten them running pretty well, but it takes a while. My gut tells me this is as good as this one is going to get and I really don't think I want to screw with it.

I was looking at some of the Edelbrock carbs. I've had pretty good luck with Carter AVS carbs in the past and my first thought was an Edelbrock AVS, but I am a bit curious about using their AFB version.

What's everybody using??

The Edelbrock AVS 750 cfm, I think it's model 1411?

I have an Edelbrock 1406 (600 cfm electric choke) on my 1978 NYB 400 ci. I just took a 2,500 mile road trip from Baltimore, Maryland to Green Bay, Wisconsin and averaged 75-80 mph and got an average of 15 mpg. That's plenty of carb for the yacht.

The Edelbrock 1411 (750 cfm electric choke) is great for a 440 as stated by others.

I prefer Carter carbs, I'm currently running TQs and the Edelbrock AFB and they are fine. Nothing sounds like a TQ at WOT.

Been running Edelbrock 650 cfm AVS Carb w/electric choke and spacer on my 383 ci. No regrets yet.

I would keep the TQ, as Mr C stated there's nothing like it at WOT,,I had a built 440 in my 67 fury wagon and decided one day to put a 750 holly on it,it ran great but when I dropped the pedal there was no sound,so I put my TQ back on,,there's nothing like the sound of your carb trying to suck the hood through the carb,,,,

TQ: Been there - done that. Meh...
TQ heavily reworked. Love it.
Edelbrock: Been there - done that. Meh...
Holley: Been there - done that. Meh...
Heavily reworked Holley: Been there - done that. Less meh.

So your still alright with me sending you my TQ for a rework right?? Ha!

I had a rebuilt TQ from autozone on my old coronet. Worked great, but was nothing to write home about.

Had a Holley 750dp on the newport that worked great. I loved it. Once tuned didnt need to touch it again. Deff didnt have the sound of the TQ.

Currently have the stock rebuilt holley 2brl on the blumo that works great... Have a TQ to be rebuilt for the big block going in. Cant wait to see how good she runs...

I bought another maniflod this morning, so I'm gearing up for the change. Probably after Carlisle I'll get serious.

Regarding the TQ, I really don't care about the sound at WOT. That's not a factor. As I said, the TQ on the car runs OK, but I'm not impressed. Climbing the steep hills to my house will really show you what runs right and what doesn't. The TQ needs to be "pushed" to do it. I think it's the tiny primaries that kill it. This particular TQ seems to be worse than the other TQ carb'd cars I've had.

I've had 4 cars that I used Edelbrock carbs on. Pretty much out of the box and bolt on with almost no adjustments. Currently have one on my 1978 NYB with a 400.......15 mpg all day long.
