Ok put the points back in the newport left the distributor where it was. I started the car it was fine then I messed with the mixture screws on the carb now the car won't start and I seen of puff of smoke come out of the top of the carb. the air cleaner had some vapor on it. I checked the position on the balancer and it points towards cylinder one when its tdc on the balancer . No gas smell on dipstick. The seals springs lifters pushrods all brand new. Double roller chain. maybe I screwed the timing up by turning the dist a hair but I put it back and still did it. Those screws on the carb I think that screwed it up. New head gaskets and redone heads no coolant in oil or oil on spark plugs.

if you have a snorkel air cleaner, you are supposed to set idle and mix with the snorkel on. it is a REAL restrictive breather. turn your carb screws all the way in SOFTLY don't mash them in tight, just til they stop.
back the carb mix screws out 1 1/2 times and see if you can get it started..

you didn't say if you messed with the idle screw.

get a fire extinguisher. you can blow fire thru the top of the carb. its exciting.

Ok I put the pertronix kit back in even though I am sending it back for the ignitor 2 instead and it started right up not one problem. I did keep messing with the mixture screws and I actually got it running good, I put it in to gear no stalling it goes to around 600 rpm in gear and is set at around 800 for idle is that too low.

Thats is about where mine is, really need to buy and exhaust, i have some side pipes coming out of the sides under the front fender, the heads having to get done set me back $550 which was the cost of the tti exhaust.
