I'm sure this topic has been visited before so "calm down". I honestly did try to find subject in the archives and couldn't. Soooo...and away we go! For some of you that are not familiar with me, I have a 65 Monaco. Today's question....Carter vs Edelbrock. I was told that the original Carter cannot be rebuilt. Why, say you? Heck, I don't know. Maybe because it sat for over 30 years. (I know, my bad but give me a break. I quit smoking 2 days ago and I'm just looking for a head to bite off..so careful where you tread) I don't remember what model Carter it was, but it was stock. I am going to electronic ignition and stock manifold. I only asked for one thing for Christmas....a carb. If Santa had thought I was good...I would have gotten it and not had to post this. Guess he thought I needed that bracelet and heating pad more. <sigh>

Unless it is a Thermoquad, any Carter should be able to be rebuilt unless it has somehow been damaged from dropping or something major like that. Sometimes the Thermoquad bowls warp and do other weird things that are very hard to figure out, and other times I have had no problems with them. But the WCFBs, AFBs, AVS models are easily rebuilt. Now if you have an original Holley, you might as well give up from the start and just get a new one, or better yet switch over to the Carters. The original Holleys warp and are usually not rebuildable. Carters, however, are simple and robust.

Edlebrocks are very good carburetors, having been designed from the original Carters, but they are $$. Good luck.

I concur with saforwardlook AFB and AVS Edelbrock are easy to rebuild and they work afterward. Does your move freely? Be careful with any carb cleaning soaking solutions to clean them some can be pretty damn toxic.

Well Edelbrock is now making the AVS Carb that Carter used to make so if you are talking about which new carb you should buy if the original is too far gone to use it should be Carter vs Holley. Several of us have recently bought new Edelbrock 1406 or 1411s and they work pretty good right out of the box for some. Since the rebuild of my top end last year though I am still experiencing a performance issue that I thought was going to go away with the new cam and timing set. I am now on the fence as to if the Edy that I bought was good right out of the box. Other issues with the car kept me from getting to the bottom of it before the white stuff started flying up here. Some people swear by the Holley brand and I think they each have there pros and cons. For a 383 you'd want the 650 cfm and 750 cfm for the 440 if you go with the Edy. I'm sure others will chime in on this one....

Edelbrock 1411. It's 750 CFM and comes with an electric choke. Perfect for a 440.

Let me know if you are going that route....I'll let you know what else you'll need.

Good luck quitting, I quit 12 yrs ago. Carburetor wise your original is probably only 500-525 cfm used to create good drivability not top performance a factory compromise for customer satisfaction, unless its a 100 point resto ditch the original, the 650 for a 383 750 for a 440 is good advice and give a kick in the pants over original. I like the avs based thunder series but the afb/ performer style is basically the same except the secondary operation is slower to operate and harder to adjust if you would want to. i'm not sure if you could rig linkage to keep the divorce choke operation which I can never use because of heat crossovers blocked, if not electric is easy to work with. I got 13 mpg in a 440 with a 292/509 mp cam 1411 performer so a engine with "normal cam" should be able to easy get 15+ out of the box

I too find it odd that the Carter was deemed unrebuilable. Maybe a lot of wear in the body from the throttle plate shaft? That's what eventually trashed our thermoquad. I am going to an edelbrock on my 65 polara along with one of their intakes. I am switching from two barrel to four barrel. I have looked at the carter carbs on eBay and such because I was planning on going that route and rebuilding one myself. But I have owned three edelbrocks, and all were good performers right out of the box and easy to tune.

You got spoiled. I got my wife a dust pan for Christmas. You should have seen her face... I know why she had that face, 'cause I had bought her the broom for birthday.
