Following the success of @sixpkrt's 4th Midwest C-body Show earlier this month, it is time to post about the second CATL.

Wyatt, Tim, Scott, and I are in for sure. David likely is as well. Who else?

The first (2019) CATL ran from Rockford to the old Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee last September. The 2020 edition will run from Rockford to the Indiana Dunes National Park, on Lake Michigan's southern shore. The change in destination is meant to make it easier for folks from Indiana (e.g., @david hill) and Michigan (e.g., @GT dave) to join the original crews from Illinois (@71Polara383, @sixpkrt) / Wisconsin (@70 Sport Suburban) / Minnesota (@LocuMob).

Type of event: This is not a stationary show -- Tim's Midwest Shows have that corner of the "market" covered in spades. Same as last year, the idea of a CATL is to drive our C-bodies through smaller roads to some nice locations. Then, of course, we park the cars/eat/shoot the breeze.

This year's destination: the Indiana Dunes National Park is located 2.5 hours from Rockford using the highway and 3.75 hours using smaller roads (we shall use small roads going at least one way). The advantage of the Dunes is that the location roughly splits the distance between Indianapolis and Rockford (IL)/Racine(WI)/Watervliet(MI).

The itinerary: I have attached a map of the planned itinerary between Rockford and the Dunes. Scott, Wyatt, and I will depart from the Exxon station in New Milford around 8:30AM. We will meet up with Tim (and potentially with others from the Chicago / LaSalle /Chambana areas) at the parking lot of the Powattamie Park in St Charles, IL. After a pit/photo stop, we'll head east to the West Beach parking lot at the Dunes National Park, right next to the picnic area.

Parking and picnic: I have rented covered area "shelter" #3 from 6AM to 9PM. It is for 12 people max -- should the crowd be larger, I'll book #4 as well. Car fees are only collected in summer months, so parking ought to be free. Here is a map:

I'll talk to the wife about our schedule when I get home from work but that looks like a good time!

You are thorough, no doubt!

I think my clubs up-ended spring show/swap is still on for the 20th at the Packard Proving Grounds. You guys should head further East On Saturday and attend.

I like the get the car out and use it idea, seems no one does poker runs anymore and the like. Was a part of a couple runs where it was so cool, you'd come to a 4 way stop and hot rods going every which way

stumbled onto this.
a leisurely cruise to st. charles from rockford, puts you guys at the park abouts 10:00 - 10:30 am.
id like to stop in, and see your vehicles.

The weather forecast for next Sunday shows partly-sunny weather (71 day/55 evening) the whole way from Rockford through St Charles to the Dunes. I therefore confirm that the CATL is on for Sept. 20, 2020 as planned!

Our planned stops/meeting times on the way there are as follows. Notice that I plan to drive mostly on state roads, rather than take highways or toll roads:

1. Rockford, IL (8:30AM): Meet / fill up at the Exxon station in New Milford (6536 11th St, Rockford, IL 61109). We plan to leave the gas station at 8:45.

Drive south on IL 251, turn left (east) on Baxter Rd, make a right (south) on IL 15 (at that point called Lindenwood Rd) and then drive on 15 (which changes names several times) till it ends at IL 20 (confusingly called E Lindenwood Rd). Make a left (turn east) on IL 20 and drive till it T-bones Esmond Rd. Turn right (go south) on Esmond and then immediately turn left (go east) on the Old State Road. Stay on the OSR till it merges into IL 64 just after Five Points. Drive on Sycamore till St Charles: cross the Fox River, then turn left at the second intersection after the bridge, onto N. 2nd Ave. Drive 7 blocks on 2nd till it ends at North Ave.

Turn left on North, and after about 300 ft our first planned stop will be there:

2. St. Charles, IL (10AM): Meet at the Pottawatomie Park. The parking lot is located at 8 North Ave, St. Charles, IL 60174. Hopefully @metaldad, @furious70, and other Illinoisans can join us there.

Depending on how many folks meet up with @71Polara383, @LocuMob, @sixpkrt (unfortunately @70 Sport Suburban and his Dad are unable to join this year) in St Charles, the plan is to leave around 10:45AM. If we chat a lot and run later, then I'll warn folks joining us in Indiana by posting about any delay in this thread next Sunday morning.

Leaving the Pottawatomie parking lot, we turn right (go east) and take North Ave. for a few blocks till it ends at N 5th Ave. We make a right on 5th, aka IL 25. We drive south on IL 25 till it intersects IL 38 in Geneva. We make a left on IL 38 (called E State St at that point), and drive east on IL 38 till we arrive in the town of West Chicago, IL. We make a right on Joliet St. to get to IL 59. We then follow IL 59 south all the way till we hit I-80. There, we avoid Joliet by getting onto I-80 and stay for a few miles till we exit on IL-30 (Exit 137). We drive east on IL 30 till we cross the border into Indiana and hit I-65.

We drive north for a few miles on I-65 and exit when we hit IN 12. The interchange is a bit confusing, so here is a blowup of the area for clarity for folks who have not been there:

We then follow 12 east all the way to our final destination:

3. Indiana Dunes National Park (12:30PM): The West Beach parking lot is reached by making a left from IN 12 at Country Line Rd in Gary, IN and then an immediate right on West Beach Rd. I have rented covered area "shelter" #3 for the whole day; the shelter is located right next to the parking lot.

If you plan to come and have not seen your name mentioned thus far, please give me a heads up. If we are more than 12, which would be great, I will need to rent a second shelter. For Covid-19 reasons, folks should bring face masks and their own food/drinks.

FWIW, I will probably leave around 5PM and head back to Rockford. By that time of day, I plan to use the highway to shave off an hour or so from the return travel time.

Edit: @traintech55 just informed me that there is a car show at the Luke gas station on Indianapolis Ave in Hammond, with food available. So we may weave that into the program.

I have changed the later part of the itinerary at the request of several Illinois members, so that more folks are able to participate for at least part of the trip. @furious70, @metaldad, @Xenon, @traintech55 -- please note the revised itinerary in Post #10 above.

shoot, removed the east travel out of St. Charles that was better aligned to my life :p

Sorry it took all week to get back to everyone. This is the food place I suggested for Sunday, (about a mile and a half from my house), as you can see the show tonight had about 30 cars, and considering it was only 54 degrees, that was a good turn out.
The information is as follows,
Blue Top Drive In
8801 Indianapolis Boulevard
Highland Indiana,
It is about 1.5 miles south from I80/94 and about six miles north of where US30 crosses Indianapolis Boulevard.
They also have live music on Sundays, and the weather is supposed to be 70 degrees.

I keep saying next year. I just need to drop everything and go. (To the west of Rockford would be perfect. Hint Hint).
Have a great day.
At least next weekend I am planning on doing a 300 mile cruise in Northern SD (Sissiton) for fall leaves tour.

Happy Motoring
