I have recently done the wiring update to eliminate the factory amp gauge in the dash to my 1967 Fury convertible. Since doing this last year I have burnt out 5 of the Mopar Performance voltage regulators (blue). Does anybody have any ideas ? Do I need to go back to a stock voltage regulator ?

The blue regulators are not meant for street use. They will burn out.

You can buy a Wells VR706 from AdvanceAutoZone.

Why did you eliminate the factory ammeter?

The bulkhead connector is a very weak point in the power distribution system. SO by running a heavy gauge wire from your main power stud on the alternator, over to either your battery, or the main power stud on the starter relay, you have bypassed a lot of that voltage, and amps. Not having those volts and amps running through the weak link, then through the amp gauge, and back to the battery, is just a better way to help keep your car from a potential electrical fire. ;)

I hear you - lucky for me that I've never had such a problem in any of my cars, but I know of others who have - the system as originally designed works perfectly - as long as one maintains the molex connectors to to death, as I do. The cars as offered were never designed to last beyond five years or so anyway; I submit that the wiring was 'adequate' for the intended purpose.

I had the odious task of creating and installing a wiring harness for a GTX back in the early eighties when I was a young punk - he had a molex connector/dash fire that wrecked everything - had to replace the windshield and dashboard - heavier gauge wire, OEM molex connectors, silver solder, and pure copper connectors did the trick.

Made myself some good dough on that job.

I have done the same thing to my wagon, and the clunker Fury in the avatar, that I drive everyday.

I bypassed the ammeter because I had an electrical issue and my fuse box melted & burnt wires going under the dash and the ammeter was involved. So I did the MADD wiring from the alternator and changed the wire in the bulkhead connector. So since the electrical issue that melted many items, I am cautious about charging problems. Some one else did tell me to try the Auto Zone regulator. I did order one. Hopefully I can try it this weekend. Thank You all for your help. Thanks for welcoming me to the forum.

I did the MAD conversion. The wiring in the connector below the steering wheel was dried out and brittle. Once I started moving it around it began to.fray. Got so bad that one day my car cut off on me.in the middle.of.Haddonfield township.intersection one day. Anyway.I had to buy new Molex.connectors to rebuild.the plastic connector and rewire everything. BIG pain in the *** but glad I did it.
