Need advice. Car was not running very smooth and gas mileage was stupid. Replaced the following: air cleaner, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, points, condenser. Still ran bad. Found out distributor bushing was worn and replaced including new vacuum advance. Car ran great for 2 days and distinct improvement in gas mileage. But started to get worse and worse. Continual stalling. Backfiring through carb. Readjusted timing and carb several times and runs great for a couple miles, then gets bad very quickly. Has been suggested that I got a bad distributor from Autozone. Any other suggestions and ideas would be welcomed.

I think you're on the right track since it is an AZ rebuilt.
Return it and try a new aftermarket piece.

Also if you backfired too much thru the carb could have taken out the accelerator pump. I put a brand new carb on my car and it backfired and ruined it. I was lucky the store took it back and gave me a new one.

I'm 100% with you on this. I bought one and the shaft was warped right out of the box.

Might want to check your timing chain for slop.If its original the nylon teeth are most likely breaking apart.

Sorry I have not thanked you all for the advice. The problem was finally solved with the Fourth distributor from Auto Zone. That's right -4.

Was it a Cardone or their house brand super sub-Tiawanese cheapo version?

I believe it. AZ is getting even worse lately. I was still trying to get a few things from them here, and there. Simply because its easier to get, and usually the part is in my hand then, or the next day. But the parts I've gotten lately have completely chased me out of there.

I refuse to shop there anymore.

Its a shame too. The manager up there is spectacular actually. She"s saved my *** on her own time off a couple times. Shes made trips to my house with her own personal tools after work, that the store doesn't have/rent, or is way too much $$. And helped me get the job done. Only asking to make sure I come back for more buisness.

I bet you can manually set the timing within a few degrees too. LOL!

I think part of the problem is all the cores are getting so old and worn they are past being rebuilt.

I know this is a somewhat old post, but I'm having what sounds like the same symtoms as you were having. Replaced cap, rotor, points, wires, plugs, carburetor (Edelbrock 1406), intake mani gaket, and added a fuel pressure regulator. Car was running like a top then all of a sudden barely starts gotta baby the throttle to keep it clinging to life and backfires. Looks liek the previous oiwner replaced the distributor.... I've already repaired some of his fancy work, so I wouldn't be surprised if its a Cardone or Duralast or some crap. Whats the best way to inspect/diagnose a bad Distributor???

Get one from Autozone, put it in, if no change, return it.
They take anything back....

Ha I'll keep that in mind for the future. Ended up making a trip down to Summit and picked up one of their Electronic distributor conversion kits. Shes running like a top now. I think I may have exercised the demon finally. Now I just gotta get the Electric choke hooked up. Looks like the temp sensor at the front of the engine would be a good place to get my +.
