I have a 68 newport
convertible top stop working

works for a second and stops

checked switch and for Leak in the lines

It sounds like the circuit breaker is doing it's work, breaking the circuit over 30A? In my -67 convertible the breaker is under the driver's kickpanel, it should be quite easy to measure if it breaks the line.

When the motor stops there is still power at the motor. If you release switchable and wait 15 sec, the switch will again operate the top for only a couple seconds

X2 ......... Disconnect the lift cylinders at the top and operate the motor. If it kicks off you either have a worn out motor/pump, a direct short in the supply harness or the circuit breaker is defective.

Let us know what you find.

My money is on lift cylinders.

The lift cylinders only work if the motor/pump runs. No power ..... no lift.

About the only thing that goes wrong with a lift cylinder is a blown seal, rarely both at the same time. You can hear the escaping fluid and there will be fluid residue present.

It does sound electrical to me. Check the grounds. Use a jump box to test the motor, or any 12 volt battery.

Disconnecting the cylinders at the top frame eliminates a binding top frame condition.
Motor starts .... then stops ....... ground OK ....... connection OK.

Trips the relay ..... excessive draw by the motor ...... bound up pump ........ defective circuit breaker.

You should invest in a FSM, (factory service manual).

I have a cd manual.
Power is still at motor when it stops moving.
i think what I found out is the motor has a defective heat link, that shut off power inside the housing so I can't replace without opening. For 220 I ordered a New one since the existing motor was slow moving anyway. There's no binding or fluid leaking.
