Hello folks I looking for some sound advice from you 440 experts out there. I have a 71 New Yorker with the stock 440 and I would like to remove the crank filter from the valve cover the problem which I discovered is that it seems difficult to remove it spins fine in the valve cover but does not want to be pulled our like most other filters that are located in a valve cover this particular one has the 3 outlits they are almost impossible to order only on ebay and they want almost $400 for the 3 outlit type I just want to remove the or final filter clean it in a solution and place it back on. D I have to remove the valve cover to do this I would think not bot I don't want to pry it of and possibly damage it and also whats a good solution to clean it with..is gasoline ok or is something else recommend. .thanks folks

Yes, you can clean it.

Gasoline will work, but I'd rather see you use something a little less flammable. Even kerosene or diesel fuel.

I think that one may be in a rubber grommet and it should pull off.

Yes it has the rubber grommet but it seem to use alot of force to pull out..ok I will try to pry it evenly on both sides this time thanK's for the Info big John once I remove it I will clean it in varasol or diesel. ..wom can you believe $400 American on ebay. ..all the best brother.

Sometimes the retaining gasket get very brittle with age and oil. You might have to replace it, or try lubing it up with Gojo hand cleaner to soften the rubber.

The breather goes into a rubber grommet that turns into concrete, I would try to twist and wiggle it out while pulling/prying on it. Don't pry too hard or you will bend the breather. Also be careful not to dent the valve cover. Then replace the grommet.

Thanks for the advice fine sir..are those grommet hard to find. More than likely your normal parts store no longer carries them but maybe online..ebay more than likely..all the best

I would be surprised that if they aren't still available from Chrysler that someone isn't reproducing them.
The part # is 2946 079.

If you go on Parts Voice, you can look up a dealer or other seller in your area that will have the grommet that is correctly specified by 65 500.

PartsVoice Part Search Results

Just enter that you are looking for a Chrysler part, enter the part number and the quantity needed and your postal code (if Parts Voice only accepts U.S. Zip Codes, you might need to enter a ZIP code for a U.S. city closest to you and then order a grommet from the that dealer that comes up in the search. Many dealers and others do stock that part it appears (94 of them in the U.S. at least).

Also, Classic Industries indicates they have the correct reproduction breather cap grommet, p/n MN1051 for $4.99 ea. plus shipping:

Got em instock $7 ea lots available so I'm sure your local dealer will be able to source them.

But a chrome grommet would dress it up nice!

I had the same issue removing my breather. It spun but wouldn't easily pull out. Some silicone spray and steady pulling pressure while rotating it got it out. No prying. Surprisingly, the rubber grommet was ok - not too hard. I was even able to remove and reinstall it with no issues, so I could paint the covers. Heating it up helped greatly.

It's the 3 outlet breather that makes it $$$. 70-71 CA. Emission only, 72 started evaporator canister and brother went back to single large tube. Believe me I looked a long time for mine, because you know my cheap *** is not paying $400.
