Curious, but how many of our members here work on their own cars?

I was wondering how many of our members work on their own cars?
1 ) How many have painted their own car or plan to? Not yet, but will be.
2 ) How many have pulled their own engines/transmissions? too many to count
3 ) How many perform their own engine work/mods? most all except machine work.
4 ) How many have done their own electrical wiring/troubleshooting?do all that myself
5 ) How many have done their own interior/upholstery work? never done upholstery
6 ) How many have done their own suspension work? yep, and it's actually one of my favorite things to do.....air tools.

Now,I realize that there may be certain things that some of us cannot do because of certain restrictions. Not everyone has the ability to bend an exhaust system in their garage or do a wheel alignment at home, and some people don't own air compressors or have a spray booth to paint. So I was wondering how many of you do any of this work listed above or do you farm out some of it when your restoring a car?:yes_no:

.............

It's nice to see that most of the people here have tackled most of their own work on their car or have done it on a previous car. It's also good to hear that some people are willing to try something out for the first time.Like stated in one of the responses,Google and Youtube has lots of information and videos that are How-To's and will give you most of the knowledge required to do the job.I only wish we had all this information(and the parts availability) thirty years ago, would have made working on cars a hell of alot easier. Now you all know who to contact when you need help with your build and who's done it before.

I've done it all on many different makes. Obviously I don't do machine work, final alignments, and I have not rebuilt an automatic. A couple pics of current project standing in the way of my Fury. It does take time, and there is a learning curve, but the internet can shorten it. Sometimes you will screw something up, and I chalk that up to doing it yourself. Once I was fixing my furnace with my Brother and we replaced a transformer on it. When I turned the power on at the breaker box, it made a loud boom! WTF was that? My Brother yelled back "that's a $100 firecracker!"

BTW,nice Mini that your working on! I'm a big fan of British cars (as bad as people may say they are) having owned various Triumphs,MG's,Rovers, and Jaguars. It's just that every country has their own way of building things.Gotta love em! Always keep you on your toes!

I was wondering how many of our members work on their own cars?
1 ) How many have painted their own car or plan to? Yes, have done extensive sheetmetal work and paint on fury
2 ) How many have pulled their own engines/transmissions?yes
3 ) How many perform their own engine work/mods? yes, altho ill let a pro assemble up to shortblock
4 ) How many have done their own electrical wiring/troubleshooting? yes, behind the dash is a birdsnest, testimony to my poor auto electrical skills, but most of it works most of the time!
5 ) How many have done their own interior/upholstery work? Have made a parcel shelf and front kickpanels/speaker pods, left the custom leather bench seats of my good mate who is a pro upholstery man
6 ) How many have done their own suspension work? yes

Love working on my fury

I have done all of the above on different cars, but I have not done metal work. That is why I am taking a class in about a week. I didn't upholster my 300. For what I had done it was way beyond my skills or equipment. I have installed only pre sewn seat upholstery which actually turned out better than I expected.

I don't like electrical trouble shooting but I can do it. I hate working on the car during the cruising season unless it is to finish something I started n the winter. I will get lazy sometimes in the summer and have a local mechanic work on my car so I can enjoy it on the weekends.

I've pulled the engine and trans in my Fury. Installed the cam, intake and carb and distributor as well as the radiator and fuel cell. This car was my first attempt at body work and paint. Learned a lot! There are several things I will do differently next, but I'm pleased with the result as a driver car.
I can't take sole credit for everything as I've had a ton of help from good friends! I like the hobby for the lifestyle as well as the camaraderie.
I hope to continue working on cars and learning more and more.

Alan where were you hooked to in this photo? Or what did you hook to to do the lift?

I love that picture, the young lady is my Niece, 10 years old and eager to help put this car together.

This pretty much sums it up, it was more than strong enough no sign of flexing not even a bit.

I am in the middle of installing a used 2 post lift in my shop so I can do anything I want to my '68 Newport vert and '93 D150.I have pulled engines and tranny's in the past, so that stuff will be easy now.I also am setting up to paint in the future. It is a slow process when working with a low, low budget!:thumbsup:
