Dale's 1969 Chrysler 300 Coupe

sorry, last one, also came across the original steering wheel (which I didn't get thrown in with the original deal) and it seems to have more of the "speckled" mildew (?)
still on it as well (?)

Is the original steering wheel going back on the car?
no, long story, but the seller did not include all of the original stuff with the sale, and I didn't even thtink to ask, I just assumed would (though I guess I may have bought it anyway) he and his brother made some attempt to bring some stuff to Gary's a while back, then at the last minute he said he realized I was near Greenville, NC, NOT Greenville "SC"
anyway, don't really expect to hear back from him, plus I kind of hated paying him for the parts even if he would have given me a "good deal" to me, a real "car guy" would have included all of the original stuff, but anyway, thanks for Gary, he is putting me one in that will be fine. I hate the custom one, the current valve covers and that ugly air cleaner. I've got most of the parts (and manifold too). I always just want a bone stock look. however, I am going with some road wheels, they are later style, but I realize, even the earlier ones did not come out until' 70 anyway. Also, Putting some road wheels on the convertible too, though I admit the original "turbine" wheel covers have kind of grown on me, as well as the wheel covers that are on the hardtop. anyway, sorry for the long, strung-out answer. thanks for asking.

but I still can't but help wonder at the slight possibility of the car being in a flood. I know you thought otherwise, and you would know best, but I also noticed on the panel you fixed what looked like water stains.

That's pretty typical damage from someone leaving the plastic sheet off the door. The rain water comes in around the window and without the plastic, it drains down the board and destroys it.

Years ago, I had a 69 Roadrunner that I stored in a barn for the winter. I had used this place a couple times with no problems, but the last year I was there, my car got shifted down to the basement. I wasn't crazy about it, but it was too late in the season to find another place.

When I got the car in the spring, the inside was covered in white mildew. Headliner... seats... dash etc. We cleaned it up immediately when I got it home and no real damage was done. I couldn't help but think about how it would have looked and smelled if the car sat there any longer than just four months.

I have a black steering wheel just like this which needs repairs. I will do so and post pics f the process. Once it is fixed I will paint it the proper color as well. Then the only thing that will need to be hunted up will be the triangular pad with the emblem in it which I don't have.

Dale: It never ceases to amaze me how "niggardly" some people can be when they are selling stuff. He will probably never be able to use those parts himself or sell them to anyone else, and yet he felt he had to hold them back. . . The guy reminds me of Uriah Heap.

Gary, do you do your own steering wheel restorations or do you send them out?

I am going to be doing it myself yes. This will be a repair, unlike what steering wheel restorations do, they actually strip off all the plastic and remold new plastic onto the steel frame. I will only be using a two part epoxy putty to fill in the cracks and sanding it smooth.

Did a bit today, got the ignition switch back in the car and appears to be working for now, will check it more tomorrow. The door card looks nice in place, the seller of this car kept the armrest and door handle off of it. I also found that even the clip that holds the remote mirror knob in place was missing as well as the screw on chrome flange too. I had these spare so put them on.

What source do you use for custom vinyl paint or do you mix it yourself?
There is a Car Quest in town here that mixes up and matches custom paint. I go to them with a sample and tell them what I want to do with it and they make it up on the spot for me. At least I hope they still do, Advance Auto Parts recently bought them out and I am hoping they are keeping the service.
