Darrell Brown loved this car to death

this looks like a similar story I have been living with my Polara....

I'll watch this one closely

I got a little more done since my last post. Removed the seat belts, door sill plates, windlace, top mechanism, and attempted to start to remove the front seat.

Found more flow thru ventilation:

Also discovered the aftermarket reverse light switch upgrade:
IMG_1660.JPG

And that led me to believe that the steering column had been replaced at some point:
IMG_1673.JPG

Then I dove into the front seat reupholstering upgrade:

Not much left underneath:

Oh my, that poor ol' girl's had a rough life, been rode hard and put away wet too many times.

Next I decided to take the front seat out to remove the carpet. So I felt around underneath for the nuts on the bottom side of the floor.

Nothing there but weld lumps.

So the seat stays until I get it on the lift to see what's going on under there.

Due to space limitations, I want to keep it yard driving for as long as possible until I get the gas tank project done in the Custom 4DSD. (which is taking more than a year now)

Here's a preview of what's to come with the carpet removal:

I looked through the box of stuff that I found in the car during the first clean out and found a lot of cool things that I'd forgotten about. I'll post pics of that stuff soon.

There's an interim license of Darrell's that shows he was born in 1935.

Stay tuned.

Are you actaully going to restore this car or what? Massive project. I love the pictures. It is exciting seeing how rusty this car is.

No, it's strictly a parts car. I'll take every piece worth saving and scrap the rest.

But I will say that when I first got it I was tempted to drive it as is.

Lots of character.

John

Made some more progress. Got it on the lift and found why the seat is welded in place:

Passenger side:

When I first started the deal for this car, the fella selling it said that the "front frame had been repaired pretty well" and that "all the exterior trim was there".
I have to say that he was fair and honest in his description:
IMG_1725.JPG

IMG_1728.JPG

The pics don't show just how many layers of repair there are on both sides. Everything has been patched. Everywhere.

Yep, the trim is all there:

Extra screws no charge.

Got all of the trim off:

IMG_1767.JPG

Yes, more plywood.
IMG_1772.JPG

Surprisingly, the rockers and fender bottoms are still basically solid.

Found an aftermarket anti-rattle pad when I removed the grille extension:

Grille and front bumper were next:

Custom turn signals again:

Doors and fenders are next.

Fenders were next:

It took some head scratching before I figured out the extra hidden bracket. Looks like convertible only. None of the other Newps have it.

To do it right, the outer wheelhouse should come off first. I took/broke enough bolts off to peel it back for access.

Six bolts on each side and the doors were off:

IMG_1804.JPG

Rear bumper is still on because of welds where bolts used to be.
IMG_1802.JPG

Yes, the hood still latches and she still yard drives.

That's about as far as it goes for now. I have to get the gas tank done in the Custom 4DSD before this one comes apart any further.

Pics of things found in the car will be next.

Stay tuned.

John

I lied, a few more of the car, almost new fuel tank:

New parking brake cables:

And the custom fit muffler:

Pics of Darrell's stuff coming soon.

Updates? Been 3 months...

Thanks or the reminder/motivation.

I'll get pics of the treasure found in the car this weekend.

I'm hoping to get back to the gas tank project tomorrow. Once that's done, then it will be full force on the Darrellmobile.

Stay tuned.

This kind of rust on the top of the wheel wells looks familiar to me..

**UPDATE AS PROMISED**

I did a little more dismantling. Removed the heater box and radio:
IMG_1839.JPG

The original AM radio had been upgraded at some point but didn't work when I got the car. So no clue of what was done, no literature found for it either.

Removed the inner fenders:
IMG_1835.JPG

Yes, I joined the "wood where metal used to be" club.

That's as far as I'm going until the gas tank job is done on the Custom 4DSD.

And yes, she still yard drives and the hood still latches.

Like I said at the start, Darrell loved this car. He had the engine rebuilt in 2010 and then put nearly 20k miles on it in about three years.

A note from the mechanic:

It says:

Darrell,

We had to order rear brakes shoes for the Newport. Call shop to set up appt to get this done.

Thanks,

Stewarts
