Dash speaker size? '65/'66 Chrysler

The grill on my 67 has threaded studs on it that go through holes in the dashtop and is retained from underneath.

Looking from below, I didn't see any clips for the metal speaker grill. It almost appears that the grill is a permanent part of the dash pad steel base and foam.

It's also interesting to note that the opening for the grille is smaller than the speaker shape.

The 6x9 Custom Autosound dual voice coil speaker I bought fit, but not without modification. You can see they are roughly the same size and depth:

However the size of the magnet is much larger on the replacement speaker. Consequently it was bumping against the face of the dashboard (just above the glovebox and clock).

The magnet is up against the dash at the right side of the photo above. You can see how I adjusted it a bit by drilling new mounting holes to shift it further forward under the dash. There was enough room to move it sufficiently without hitting the defroster duct.

Besides that adjustment, I'm pleased. The converted radio sounds great and having features like Bluetooth is gonna spoil me.

Congratulation on the new music set up. I was working out the logistics of my today. I am going with a pair of 3 1/2 speakers in the front and a pair in the rear location between the seats.

The depth of the magnet is why I decided to go with 2 separate 3 1/2 speakers, because I am putting the head unit in the glove box. The magnet I believe may have been obstructing my head unit location.

Why not get the stock unit upgraded to modern internals?

Just being cheap. I bought a lift and it blew the 300 budget. I will probably do it in a couple of years.

You kind of know how I am. I would discibe myself as impatient on a budget. I will do things on a temporary basis so I can enjoy it, but will go back and do it right later.

Next year I will probably rebuild the engine. :)

Classic Car Speakers

My car had a set of tiny modern speakers that probably came from Walmart and sounded like ****.
I bought the 4x10 Slimline Oval and also the rear oval. I have a 66 Dodge Polara Convertible and there was a clearance problem with the 4x10 universal oval I returned it for the slimline which fit perfectly.
They come in the correct impedence and worked perfectly with an original 1966 radio. Sounds just like a brand new car.

Has anyone removed their dash pad in a '65 Chrysler? I would like to get my dash pad restored but have never removed a dash pad before.
I know Rexus31 has, if he doesn't see this post drop him PM he is has helped me immensely in the restoration of my '66.

You might try starting a new thread stating your question. It might get lost in this thread. I want to think you have to remove the windshield to remove the dash which is opening another can of worms, because the aftermarket window gaskets stink. I found a NOS gasket, which Rexus31 recommended to me.

Windshield removal is only necessary if you need to remove the entire dash assembly. Under the dash, near the cowl, you will see 8 (I believe) nuts running the length of the dash. remove these and push up on the studs. You may also need to remove the dash bezels. With someone pulling on the pad and someone underneath pushing the studs up, you should be able to get it out.
