Defrost door foam seals 69 fury

I think the DMT heater box rebuild kit includes foam seals for the defroster door. I think because the shop that did work on my car did a halfa$$ job on the heater box. When you hand actuate the door from closed (first pic) to open (secon pic) there is about a quarter inch of travel and it does not open all the way or close completely. Does the foam seal that is applied need to be trimmed to the edge of the metal door (third pic) for full operation?

To me, something does not look correct. Foam for a flapper door seal? Should that normally be a flap of thin rubber that will not deteriorate?

That foam looks more like what might be put inside of a duct for thermal control or sound control, to me.

So, they are usually just the sheet metal door?

I did the heater box on a ‘68 and that flapper is about the same. There’s supposed to be foam on all sides.

Even with the metal door. You’ll see where the seal points are when you assemble.

I slowly trimmed the foam seal until it closes and opens fully. Not sure what use the foam is. I also emailed DMT for the kit instructions, waiting on a reply

Going from my fogbrain mind, I thought that the foam helps seal between the flapper door and the housing, minimizing leaks where you don’t want the air to go.

May, but on the angled edge the foam inhibited the doors full span of operation.
