My dome lamp is the type with a switch on the front. It seems to pull a little shade back and forth to light up the front or back seat, is that also an electric switch as well?

Seems that in the forward most position the light is off. Also the lens keeps falling down but with the switch all the way forward it seems to hold it up tightly (?)

Probably has some of the locking tabs broken or disintegrated with age. It just snaps into the base.

The switch works just like the map light on the instrument panel. It can come on as a normal dome lamp when a door is opened, or it can be turned on with the switch, other than the light switch on the instrument panel, as desired.

How do you set it to open with the doors? I've been able to get it on and off but not with the front doors (was working until I changed the bulb )

Expensive dome lamp as it was used in the 70/71 E body cars.
The switched style ones are found in the Barracuda Gran Coupe and Challenger SE

Does that mean you can get a new repro?

Yes. If your little door switches are busted/unplugged they won't trigger the domelight to come on with the doors.

Basically all the way forward is full dome. Then with the switch back it should shield the light and force it through the little slot to put a narrow beam of light right into the front seat. Dome/map light.

So when it's all the way forward it should go on/off with the doors? What about in the middle?

Just curious, can I replace this broken one with a "regular" rectangle shaped dome light (no switch) ? I just want to have light when I open the doors

Yea you can swap with any basic dome but if your switch work's on the dome you have power to the light set up. So when you open the doors it should light up id check the door actuators in the door frame if there's a broken wire or corroded piece. Thats why the dome wont turn on when you open the door's more then likely.

Or I guess it could be stuck on as well. I think I will check the door switches next. When it's full forward no light, middle to full backwards the light comes on even with all the doors closed

Correct when switch is forward dome will be off. Its a dome slash map light option so id bet your switches are bad in the door jam or broken wire both 71s I picked up this summer had bad switches.

So, forward off all the time, and when switch is in the middle or back it goes on and off with the doors? In that position it's on all the time even with the doors closed. I'll check the door switches next
