...for the first time in nearly 2-1/2 years. Long story why that is, but I was quite happy to get it out to a Sonic cruise that was just a few miles away. I took it out last Saturday to clean it up and put some gas in it, after installing a new tank and sender. But tonight was an event put on by that Sonic and the local Mopar club. There were about 40 cars there of all makes, with about 20 or so being Mopars.

I had the cluster out while I had my clock out for a quartz conversion, so last Saturday is when I re-installed the cluster and cleaned things up. Prior to the car being parked, I had a serious charging problem, which turned out to be caused by the positive post on the factory ammeter being broken! Damn lucky the car didn't burn to the ground, as a result! So, I bypassed the ammeter altogether.

My car started right up after its long slumber, but not without issues. Right now, the sending unit for the factory tach is acting up. My speedometer won't register, but the odometer is working fine. When I turn on my park lights or headlights, the temp and fuel gauges peg out, which tells me the dash voltage limiter is toast. Also, the lights behind the left and right turn indicators and the hi-beam light will all light up when the lights are on. The factory radio has power but no sound. Lastly, there is a slight but persistent miss in the engine. Oh, and the front calipers are sticking. Yay, fun.

The blinkers, brake lights, tail lights and tag light all work fine. The headlights do, too, but the previously-mentioned problem arises.

The good thing is that the car sounds friggin' amazing, despite the problems. It drives well! I'm gonna work on the Coronet this weekend after tomorrow's cars-n-coffee, and let the Imperial sit for another week. I should fix the taillights on the '68 D100 truck, too, so I can drive that at night!

It never ends...

Sounds like a ground problem but your there I'm here and your on it. Old Mopar will get you home no matter what.

Good luck with the electrical Patrick!so
unds like you will be having a good time once sorted out

Sounds all too familiar. Just solved the starting problem I was having a few weeks ago (combination of battery cable and NSS malfunction). Yesterday I was out cruising around for a good while, came home shut the car off, ran in the house. Came out 20 or 30 mins later and the damn battery had gone flat. Just like that. So hooked up my 6/12V battery charger to the battery for a few moments and got it going again. I know what I'll be doing today. Goes with the territory.

Wow, what fun, another thing to fix...the power steering pump is leaking like mad! Fortunately, I bought a brand new ps pump kit back in 1989, new from Chrysler. I'll need to get that done before Saturday, as that is when we are having a reunion cruise of sorts. The popular local cruise spot in the late '70s through the mid-'80s was a one-mile stretch, where the turnarounds were the local Sonic and the McDonalds. On most Fridays and Saturdays from March through October, the strip was bumper-to-bumper with 15-25 year olds. From 7pm to around midnight, the cruise was simply packed with cars and people. This is an annual reunion, that started last year as just a get-together of the old cruisers; and is becoming an annual reunion; complete with many of the very same cars and trucks that were on the strip 30+ years ago!

Took the Coronet out for that reunion cruise last night. Had a pretty good time. I figure I'm the best looking participant, because everyone else looked so damn old! Of the 75 or so cars and trucks that showed up, we could count only FOUR cars that actually cruised the strip during the late '70s - mid-'80s. The City shut the fun down in 1986.

The voltmeter I installed in the car worked fine. It showed just over 12VDC at idle, with 14.2VDC at speeds over 30 mph. I do not trust replacement voltage regulators at all! My ammeter has a broken post, so it just fills the hole in the instrument cluster now.

Below is my baby. I've owned this Coronet for 34 years now. The first pic is from when I was with the car for the film shoot for Heaven's Rain, which was filmed in February 2010. The bottom is how my car looks now.
