Been kicking around doing my current exhaust to dumps right before the rear axle. The only reason is the sound;) She's a 1966 Fury 3, anyone done this and liked it :)

Funny, I went to full exhaust to get rid of the awful drone, I was running cherry bombs dumping before the axle. I can hear, and carry on a conversation in the car at speed now.

With a 383/440 it is going to be very loud, you can probably put up with it if you run stock type mufflers. With glass packs or "turbo" mufflers you are going to get a headache. Also, with the rear windows down, you will inhale lots of exhaust at stop lights.

But I still have to shorten the pipes.

I rode in a 66 Fury 440/727 from Austin, Texas to Muncie, Indiana back in 1969. I was 18 and loved loud exhaust. This one had the exhaust dumping at the axle and the droning was pretty bad. Just saying...

Most people who have done this did NOT like it. . . Even with your tail pipes going all the way back to the bumper, there may still be some objectionable drone. Some Dynamat or Fat Mat on your interior and trunk floors may help.

One of my 65's had this setup on it when I bought it (413/727). It was brand new, and I've just left it. Dual Flowmasters, I think - just in front of the axle. It's a little louder than I like, but not too objectionable. Mostly at fast idle, and mid-range (maybe 35-40). On the highway, doesn't seem to make much difference. (Maybe I've just listened to too much rock music over the years.) And, oddly enough, I've never had a problem w/ exhaust fumes entering the cabin. If you like that "rumble" around town . . . I say go for it!

Go ahead. Just throw them on, get it out of your system, and be done with it.
It's stupid but it beats stik-on Portholes.

Thanks guys, yeah I wouldn't go with cherry bombs just for that reason. I'll have to kick it around

FWIW, my 4DSD had duals dumping in front of the rear wheels with mufflers that were just shy of straight pipe.

Way too loud for my taste and more importantly, exhaust would enter the interior a lot with the windows down.

I ended up with a custom bent dual system that dumps at the rear bumper.

One reason not to do this is that the moisture coming out of the dumps collects up in the axle housing at low to no speed. Rust and condensation results from this. I run a TTI system and installed resonators just before the bumper in the straight portion that runs parallel to the fuel tank. Sounds great at idle and aceleration with no drone at any speed. Got them at Summit, don't remember what brand. I have a '65 Fury III

Well I know that there's tons of cars rolling here in Co with dumps. But..... with that said, doesn't mean they aren't breaking the rules lol.
