Usually on the passenger side you will find the casting date as to when the block was made, it usually precedes the cars manufacture date. That is, if your car was made in 68 the block will be from 67. Also from Late 1968 onwards the VIN number was stamped it the block, firstly on the ridge edge mounting next to the bellhousing. From 1969 the VIN number moved to the edge of the sump pan area on the side of the block. Also depending on whether the engine is a B or RB engine you will find the pad that has the Cu in displacement stamped in preceded by a letter denoting the year it was put in the car, i dont have the list handy but D is 1968, E 1969 and so on. The pad is found on B's beside the distributor and on RB's behind the water pump housing on top on the drivers side.
