Have a 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury, 383. This morning I ran a short, ten miles, errand with it and everything was fine. Drive into the garage and engine making a loud clicking sound which increases with rpm's. Sounds like it is on the right bank, drivers side, but hard to disguise, and sounds like it is coming from under the valve cover. Could this be a push rod or broken valve spring or stuck lifter? Has a few new lifters put in which have less than 3,000 miles on them. (it is not a wrist pin). Engine is NOT missing. Car not driven hard and it came on all of a sudden so I am a little confused by it. Suggestion would be to pull the valve cover but I not in a good position to do that and not sure what that will tell me. At the same time, I am concerned about driving it to a shop without knowing what is going on. Any EASY IDEAS?

Has something changed in the way it’s running?

Gonna have to pull the valve cover before any more damage happens.
Roll the engine over to get 135 and 7 up on compression stroke so the valves are closed, see what's loose.

Hopefully it's something easy, why were lifters replaced?

Noisey.

Edit- I see you say you aren't in a position to pull the cover, sorry.

It would be nice if you could have a look for piece of mind.

If you find it is just a stuck lifter, I have had good luck with engine treatment like Rislone.

How severe of a noise is it compared to the noisy lifters?
tick tick tick can turn into clack clack clack when a lifter collapses

It is a clack, clack, clack so I suspect a lifter, push rod or valve spring but if it was one of those I would suspect I would have a bad miss?

No, it is a 65 so there is not a converter! Checked the muffler bearings though and they are in excellent shape - I replace them every year!

I was referring to the torque converter. If you have a stethoscope its easier to pin point noises.
BTW I prefer to rotate my muffler bearings every 10,000 miles.

You have to look at stuff. So if you're in a bad position to take the cover off, either wait until that situation improves, or make arrangements to improve that position - you need to pull the valve cover, and potentially the intake if you can't see anything through the head.

My 67 will occasionally start clicking/clacking the next morning after a drive. It is the rear exhaust manifold bolt that loosens up on its own, which allows an exhaust leak.
