Enjoy

OMG, you are doing your best to make me puke now, aren't you.
Now I have to go over to Pandora, put on the headphones, and play In De Gadda Da Vida. The long version...

I said Iron Maiden not Iron Butterfly.. and yes there's a IB vinyl album floating around this house somewheres.

Why, why would anyone play it? Nah no more turn tables here.

Here's a blast from your past Stan....Turn this ish up.

I do have to admit....Jimi Hendrix was very cool...AND I've NEVER seen anyone play a guitar or manipulate feedback the way he does (did)....not even close. I understand he couldn't read a note of written music and at Woodstock his band was slated to go last b/c all the other acts refused to play after them. Can't think of anyone who comes even close in comparison today.

Nope, check out Tom Morello, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, just to name a few. Hendrix was brilliant and I LOVE his music but that star spangled thing just isn't his best stuff, in my opinion.

Which means what? Guitars haven't changed in the way they're played since Hendrix time.
There ARE no more guitar players of the caliber available 35 years ago. Just the ones left from 35 years ago.
The 70's had the best overlap of old and new best guitar players in the world. Then came that idiot dressed in a black Spanish outfit abd sunglasses. IT was over after that.

One should not consider the Star Spangled Banner improv as something serious. It was a stunt. Most people see/hear that and think well that's what Hendrix is about. There is no more, turn out the lights. Nope not even close.
Electric Lady Land is/was a masterpiece....sound paintings. There are many, many other examples of original virtuosity displayed by Hendrix (and his multiple bands). The Steve Vais, Satrianis, Eddie Van Halens of the world (yea some dorks I know tried to make a comparison) are extremely talented technically but are not originals. I kind of like Vai out of all the others as he seemed to be able to catch some of that "Hendrix" like sound/play/feeling than the other dudes, from time to time....while he was still vertical.

Personally, me personally, Randy Rhodes was better than Hendrix.

Hendrix literally invented a new way to play the guitar, true innovation.

Tom Morello literally invented a new way to play the guitar.

Eddie VanHalen literally invented a new way to play the guitar.

They're all brilliant & there are TONS of brilliant guitar players today. Stan's assertion that all the good ones are gone is obviously absurd. One important distinction though is that the guitarists of today are all beneficiaries of Hendrix's innovation. Today, even I can learn to play like Hendrix.

Hoo-boy. You knew when you typed that it was gonna start yet another tirade between us, didn't you? :D

Swartz is good at picking the best, reverse-engineering it, then replaying something CREATED by someone else.

Stan, I don't mean to brag but I'm a pretty decent player. It's not rocket science, it just takes a lot of practice. Hendrix had a natural gift that I don't possess but I can copy him.

Trey Anastasio is a joke. He won't even get on stage with Tim Reynolds. Guess why? Cuz he's a boy amongst men...

One could also be taught to paint like Michelangelo or Dagas or Piccasso or Cezanne, BUT......
to understand the technical aspects does not make the technician an engineer. The dude in the video is playing "Little Wing"...on opposite sides. I bet he could play Voodoo Child with reasonable acumen, but I also will bet if you close your eyes and listen you could deduce it was not Hendrix...on the first, second or third note. It is not my place (read: I can't) to say whose guitar is played better than the other. However, every decent playing guitarist who has made a name for themselves have had their skill and raw virtuosity compared to a long dead artist. Eric Clapton was going to stop playing when he first saw Hendrix on stage. EVEN Eddie Van Halen was compared, as silly as that is.
