Factory 4 speed shifter help!

My newly acquired ’68 Sport Fury is a factory 4 speed, and being an early ‘68 still has the Inland shifter. I’d love to change it out for something else. What can I put on there? I’d love to do a pistol grip, but open to other options!

My cousin bought a 1967 383 Barracuda new. It came with the inland shifter. I helped him replace it with a Hurst. It was one of the best mods we did to that car.
 
As previously stated, hurst is the shifter of choice. As for pistol grip, that’s just the lever. Get whatever lever fits your console and tickles your fancy.

. . . AND keeps your knuckles away from the instrument panel when shifting to 1st or 3rd !

Hurst is the way to go. However if you want to keep the stock Inland "guess a gear" shifter, I believe there is a kit to convert the "guts" of the Inland shifter to Hurst. Can any of the 4 speed guys out there confirm this? I remember reading about this a few years ago. Being I'm a column shifted, Torqueflite guy I never had to pursue it any further. That is an incredible looking SF Fast Top you have there.
 
Buy a Hurst shifter for a 1970 and earlier B body that way you will get correct rod length for the forward mounting pad/point.
The "S"ish curved shifter will work with the dash. Get one for a console car and the shifter will have the right side offset to center in your console. You can always buy a handle/pistol grip handle for a console car and bolt it onto the shifter.
 
I used to make and sell these a while back. The handle screws on to the shifter arm in place of the ball it came with. The metalflake grips give it a sixties look.

Just rebuild the Inland shifter...not hard to do. I never understood the "bad" reputation for
Inland, Hurst really isn't that much better. How are your rods adjusted?

You're not the first person to disagree - Inland shifters are known as the Mystery Shifter - probably for good reason. However, mine has been great. I probably just don't know any different!

I can't address the specific reason or reasons that Chrysler gave up on the Inland shifter, but I can tell you that after I replaced my '65 Sport Fury (365 HP/426 CID, 4-speed) with a '67 Coronet R/T (375 HP/440 CID, 4-speed), the difference between the two was all too obvious. Although I never took either to a drag strip, I found that shifting that Inland unit during an occasional stop light Grand Prix was like shifting a piece of spaghetti. I am very grateful my current '65 SF 426S still has the Hurst unit on it.

This is the only way to do it on a car this nice. To me, anything else would look like a hack job. Brewer’s has the parts right here:

Definitely will be looking into this, thank you. After consideration, because the 4 speed 68 Sport Fury is such a rare find, I am leaning towards keeping the inland shifter for originality purposes… So this would be a great fix. Although it’s out of stock - I hope it makes a return soon!

Back in the day when these cars were brand new, we called them Inland Steel toilet flushers.

Mystery Shifters were three speed shifters, not four speed shifters. They were better quality than the toilet flushers.

I swapped out the one in my GTX the day I brought it home from the dealer in February of '68 and it's STILL in there right now. In fact, I just took that car out for a spin this afternoon. Pretty cold up here in Mass but the heater works just like it did when this car was my daily driver.
