Fuel gauge question

The fuel gauge in my 68 fury is usually on E but sometimes around corners will jump to 1/4 or more and slowly goes back to E. What do you guys think is haywire. Thanx Frank

Sending unit is probably bad.
I don’t know where’s the best place to get a replacement, but I suspect others will chime in on a source.

You may also check the ground at the sending unit. It’s usually a clip that spans the hose between the sending unit and fuel line.
 
It could be any number of reasons. Send unit issue, poor connections at dash, poor ground. You gotta start testing with an ohm meter. As was mentioned in post #2. Start with testing the spanner across the hose at the tank. Then ground the wire from the sender to the gauge and see if the gauge goes to Full. 50 + years takes its toll on electrical circuits. I'm betting on bad continuity somewhere in the circuit.

I had the same problem on my 67 Newport. I replaced the sending unit and had the instrument panel redone. The fuel guage ended up being fine but I'm glad I took out the instrument panel because the ammeter was at risk of catching fire.
Anyhow, I replaced the sending unit but the guage still doesn't read correctly.
I remember reading comments on c bodies that the repro sending units aren't long enough and they have to be bent to work correctly. So that they touch the top of the tank when full. I still have to get back to it because I wanted to drive it this summer.
Keep that in mind if you replace the sending unit. You can find a better explanation on this forum.

I’d start with checking that you have a good ground at the tank. There should be a metal strap spanning across a little rubber section of hose on the fuel line.

I had a similar issue on my ‘68 300 and this helped a lot (didn’t completely fix my issue). If you do pull the instrument panel, there is a small voltage regulator attached at the back side. I had my panel out for another reason, but I swapped that regulator out with a solid state one since it was accessible. Again, didn’t completely fix my issue, but helped stabilize the fuel gauge. Mine goes to about 3/4 at full and gets to E at about a quarter of a tank.

At this point I essentially use my trip meter has my gas gauge though. Set to 0000 when I fill up, and then refill by the time I hit 120 miles. But I usually just top it off at the end of a drive and reset to 0000.
