Hello all. I'm looking for a set of 3:23s for a project I'm working on. The local boneyard has a 1970 fury. It has a 8 3/4 rear end. Any idea what gears it came with without pulling it out? According to fender tag it is a 383 ,auto. The tranny is also a heavy duty with a towing package if that helps. Thanks for any help with this.

If the build sheet is still in the car, it will also be printed on that. Usually found under the springs on one of the seat cushions. If the '70 Fury has a big block engine, odds are it will be a 3.23 ratio.

Shouldn't there be a metal tag on one of the center-section stud nuts?

If the engine code (on the data plate) indicates a factory 4bbl car, then it most likely came with a 3.23 ratio, towing package or not, unless somebody ordered it with the (optional for 4bbls) 2.76 ratio.

What indications did not see that would lead to "a tow package"? Other than on the data plate?

Most likely, it's a 2.76:1 ratio rear. Of course, anything is possible and rear ends get changed all the time. The ONLY way you will know for sure is to start counting turns of the driveshaft etc. or pull it out and look at the ring gear.

Here's the specs for a '70 Fury.

Note also:
That most police cruisers of the era had 3.23 gears. Exception would be that many highway patrol vehicles in open freeway applications would have 2.76 or 2.91 gearing. Think Texas, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada etc.
